Be careful what you use then.
Some of the stains will lift the sealer.
I would test what you decide in an out of visual place.

I'm looking to refinish the stand that came with the tank I bought from
Susan Matney. It's a standard AGA stand painted black. The paint job is old
and you can see wood here and there, so I just wanted to put a fresh coat
on. What paint would be best? Do I need to use primer first?
