Not to be confused with Lexan, which is a poly carbonate... looks like, but is very different then acrylic

 Even I've built sumps, and I was born blonde! Regional plastic has a huge scrap pile and sometimes they just give us stuff! Counting the glue, you can built one for under $10 bucks!

Today's useless trivia:  Acrylic is a generic term for a whole family of polymers (super glue actually fits into this catagory).  Plexiglas is the trade name for poly methyl methacrylate by the European company, Rohm & Haas and is still sold in Europe.  Cyro is Rohm & Haas's North American Arm and sells this same product in the USA as Acrylite.  DuPont also manufactures poly methyl methacrylate under the trade name Lucite.

I too suggest Regional Supply and Weld-On 4.  I've build a few sumps and skimmers and none have failed (knock on wood ).  It's very easy to do and you end up with a design and size you want or need.

I have built a sump, refugium and 90 gallon tank using acrylic. Plexi-glass is just a popular brand of acrylic. I used Acrylite GP

Swing by my office tomorrow and I will show you my setup.  Mark is right, a drilled glass tank with acrylic baffles would be much easier and cheaper.  The only time it pays to do an acrylic sump is if there are strict size constraints.  Buy a tank and some acrylic up at regional and I will cut it to size for you on my table saw.

It's clear that you have no experience with this sort of thing. These days it's called acrylic, not plexiglas, btw.

I would caution you regarding this. There is a high risk that your DIY acrylic tank will fail, spilling water all over. It's much safer to have an experienced person do it or at least have them teach you how to do it. There are several here on this MB that have good experience at it.

Alternatively, the cost of buying and drilling a used glass aquarium makes an acrylic sump a real hassle, not to mention about twice the price.

And I'm curious about why you called it a "sump/wet/dry filter". Are you familiar with the fact that the technology is antiquated?
