I believe you can pop a distended swim bladder and it will heal and the fish can be just fine, but this is more knowledge from fishing.... might be hard with a small specimen.

Then again, this could all be pixie dust and fantasy cause who the hell knows what happens to a fish you throw overboard back into the sea...

I'd guess it is likely the swim bladder issue was due to the collection process/procedures. I think this is as much a luck of the draw as anything. Observation at the LFS before you buy helps. Especially with the deep water and/or rare species.

Now to insert (more of) my opinion here... The most important thing to me is being taken care of by the LFS.

There's a chance that the fish wasn't collected properly and that's why it had the swim bladder issue. The vendor I got the fish from only has a 5 day guarantee, and I worry that the fish barely survives to that point and I'm out a lot of money... I was going to say, the best thing you can do if you bought it online is try get them to live up to their live arrival guarantee if that is still in force.
