If your interested in setting up a 10 Gallon your welcome to come take a look at my 10 Gallon Clown tank and I can give you some live sand from another system as well. Here are some resources you may find intresting if you haven't seen them already.

And here is one of my small tanks, this was a 10 gal. Two powerheads, one 36W helios pink-blue PC, Utah Rock and a lot of coral frags made this worth about $300.Smile

First off, Welcome!
 
You should be able to put together a decent little tank with the equipment you've listed.  You will want to find a quality light (T5 or power compacts).
 
When you get ready to set up your tank, I suggest you find someone local to you that will be doing a water change.  Coordinate a time when you can pick up their "waste" water and use that to fill your tank.  You should be able to get 10 gallons without much problem.
 
Then - go slow.  Test often and watch your new tank take off!

Hello everyone, I thought I would introduce myself and say what a great site this is.  I have been doing freshwater tanks for many years now, and have always wanted to do a reef tank.  I have been very intimidated by salt water for some time, but reading what seems to be every page on here and doing research I have finally decided to go for it.  From what I understand smaller tanks are more challenging, but I'm up to it (I hope).  I'm going to start with a 10 gallon I had collecting dust, a rio 200 power head, a heater, and a marine land 150 power filter. I'm still not sure what I'm going to do about lighting yet, I have a few ideas just no decisions right now.   Ok now for my question should I make up some water for my tank before I add sand/rock or just wait until I have the sand/rock installed? I'm assuming that live rock/sand can't be out of the water for very long is this correct? also is there any books you would suggest as good beginner books?  Thanks again for having such a great site with what I can tell are great people!!
