   <title><![CDATA[Quieting a Pump : I have an externalVelocity T4...]]></title>

    <![CDATA[<strong>Author:</strong> <a href="http://www.utahreefs.com/forum/member_profile.asp?PF=96">jfinch</a><br /><strong>Subject:</strong> 2914<br /><strong>Posted:</strong> July&nbsp;05&nbsp;2004 at 2:33pm<br /><br /><P>I have an external&nbsp;Velocity T4 pump for tank circulation and an Iwaki 40 that powers my skimmer.&nbsp; I also have a&nbsp;Mak 4 that I keep as a spare.&nbsp; The Velocity is unbelievably quiet.&nbsp; Absolutely no sound.&nbsp; The Iwaki (and the Mak 4) is a bit noisy.&nbsp; The majority of the pump noise is caused by the motor cooling fan.&nbsp; I was doing a little modifying of my skimmer and had the pump out from under the tank...&nbsp; I thought, what the heck, I'll remove the motor fan from the pump making it quieter.&nbsp; But rather then risk the Iwaki, I removed the fan from the Mak.&nbsp; Here's some before and after pics.</P><P><IMG src="http://www.xmissi&#111;n.com/~jfinch/pumpbefore.jpg" border="0"></P><P><IMG src="http://www.xmissi&#111;n.com/~jfinch/pumpafter.jpg" border="0"></P><P>Yes, I do know this is kind of a&nbsp;stupid thing to do <IMG src="http://www.utahreefs.com/forum/smileys/smiley9.gif" border="0">.&nbsp; I've got a quieter (separate external) fan blowing on the motor to help keep it cool.&nbsp; The pump is quieter then before, not as quiet as the Velocity, but better.&nbsp; It still has a bit of a vibration that I can hopefully kill with a little foam.</P><P>Have any of you done this before?&nbsp; How did it turn out?&nbsp; I will update this thread if the motor fails <IMG src="http://www.utahreefs.com/forum/smileys/smiley18.gif" border="0">&nbsp;or if six months down the road everything is ok <IMG src="http://www.utahreefs.com/forum/smileys/smiley10.gif" border="0">.</P><span style="font-size:10px"><br /><br />Edited by jfinch</span>]]>
