Some HQI/DE bulbs will actually have UV shielding built in, but most dont. They let out UV A, B, and even C. What did it for me was realizing that my MH bulb was putting out the same UV light I was using in my UV sterilizer to kill things. </P><P>Check out this link. The way I figure, for the shatter thing to really happen it needs to be a grand and rapid cooling of the bulb. My bulbs are about 4 inches above the water. They get splashed, burn hair, etc. Nothing yet and I don't see it as a concern unless something REALLY goes wrong.]]>

If I didnt have to have the glass I probably wouldnt.]]>

I am running HQI so I run a 1/8" piece of tempered glass to shield the UV.</P>]]>
