My tank is a 90g all glass older, it has thick glass but not quite 1/2inch. Could In cut the old plastic brace out and leave enough room toglue or screw on the plexiglass in place of the old brown plastic. For safety's sake, I'd keep a brace.  If your tank is glass, you'll have a hard time getting plexi to stick to it.  On one of my tanks, I removed the centerbrace that was part of the plastic rim, and siliconed a 1/2" thick piece of glass inside the tank.  It worked out very well.
