I just finished my closed loop last night and it seems to be workinggreat.  I am running a Mag 9.5 with a SQWD attached to it. Since my tank is acrylic and has a wide top plate I put the input forthe closed loop in the overflow chamber.  It looks better that waytoo since you don't see the input in the tank.  I had to adjustthe air hole in my durso a bit, and I think I will have to raise thetop of the durso since the pump sucks the water level down a bitfarther and it making things a bit more noisy.

Other than that it is working great and is really moving the water around the tank well.

There is nothing wrong with power heads. Many people use them. The closed loop is simply another way of doing things.
Powerheads take up space in the tank and typically more then a closed loop system.
There are many options when building a closed loop such as the addition of seaswirls, SCWD, and other random wavemaking devises.
As far as what type of pump any external pump will do however you need to figure out how large of a pump you need or want with your current system.

Thanks Bruce for a great demo at the meeting on a closed loopsystem.  I had a Mag3 lyning around and built one today for my30g.  It has plenty of flow and with the loc-line on the outlets Iwas able to point the streams where I wanted and eliminated the powerheads.
