I bought a r.o. unit-kent hi-s system off e-bay. now I see there is a new unit for sell for $59.00 buy it now price. The problem I have is I need new pre-filters and d-i resin and possible the membrane. The price of the filters and resin is close to the new price and if my membrane is bad it is alot more then the new unit. The question is which is better the new-no name filter or take the chance all I need is to change my filters on my Kent unit?

Look at what the membranes are made out of and also I've read that the if it has vertical canisters it is better than if they are horizontal. Just what I read it not scripture or anything.

If the first cartidge, the sediment filter is clean, or at least not completely dark brown, then the unit is probably ready to go. Have you plugged the unit in and ran some water through it? I would do that first. Run a few gallons through it to clean out the stagnant water and then taste it. If it tastes good then you're set.

If you can, check the TDS. I can do that for you or you can get it done at some LFS's.

Also don't bother with DI resin. It's not worth the trouble. RO water by itself is plenty clean for reef use. Call me if you want to discuss it in more detail or to get more tips.
