I have alot of air bubbles in my tank. It seems that it is coming from the 6 inch pvc pipes that drain into the sump. the ends of the pipes are about two inches above the surface of the sump water. this causes alot of foamy water and the air bubbles cloud my tank. I believe if I lengthen the pipes so there is no space between the pipe and the surface of the water this should fix the problem as the water will drain directly into the sump water. In addition the filter socks I am using seem to get clogged after short periods of time and I would like to use something cheaper and more efficient. Any suggestions will be welcome.

I also got sick of using filter socks so I built a outlet that has multiple baffles that I hooked to my skimmer. It is just plastic bottles of different sizes inside each other and cut to direct the outlet water.

This picture is crappy but I think you'll get the idea.

The out side is half of a 2 liter, the inside is a water or soda bottle. The water level should be lower then the inner most bottle. This almost forces the bubbles back into the air. I have the water travel through some macro after this and it has solved my problem. Hope this helps.

Are you saying that the filter socks are allowing water through full of bubbles?

What kind of socks are those?

And can you identify the stuff the socks are filtering?

Do you have some of the water going into a refugium?

Extending the pipe won't help. Mine drains into the sump well below the water line and I still get bubbles. (see signature line).

I double up on my socks and it helps but I have to change them often.

I would try the baffle system like Jeffras suggested.
