ok, cool here is what I came up with, but it is noisy. I'll have to try and modify it. Brian   there is the 1" pipe drilled with holes below the waterline,(snails can't get into the pipe) and a cap with a hole drilled on the top, so to make it quieter I had to restrict the water flow with the ball valve under the tank. The idea was to skim as much surface area water as possible for the skimmer in the sump, I am planning on making notches in the clear pvc to act as a gate. John I had a durso like the one mark built. I had to use that design when I was running u tube overflows becasue of the resticted space. I works of the same princable as the standard dursu the larger pipe goes over the top and overlaps like an umbrella. The drain holes are higher up then the lip of the lareger pvc piece. If that makes sense. The concept is the exact same as far as how it works. Yes, Bruce that makes sense. I had to use one similar to that on my 20 gallon. Mark's might be set up that way too (I can't tell from the pic), but I don't think Brian's is. Sorry, I don't have the camera right now, but think of it as crown with a short hat perched on top. Not knowing exactly how tall it needed to be to create the right level, I cut the standpipe short and placed a coupler on the end. A short length of pipe, made into the crown, was inserted into the coupler. To get the cap to sit just right, and be adjustable, so that it's bottom edge just touches the water, a movable ring of pipe is inserted into the cap. Brian, by what you wrote, I'm worried about those holes drilled in the 1" pipe below the waterline. My concern is that the sump will overflow when the power goes out. right now it is not a durso and yes it is noisy, there is clear pvc
that the water has to go over to get to the holes. and yes I've done a
power outage check. I need to create a durso, but one that can accomodate being in the middle of the tank. I was expermenting with that design to see if it would help the skimmer that was in the sump. but it is too big. ended up with pneumonia over T-day weekend lost 15lbs  . still fighting. sory for the late reply.
