It seems I have a mantis shrimp that was a hitchiker on some rock in my 29g tank.
Thankfully he hasn't decimated my LS, but he has killed a shrimp and a hermit or two.

Any suggestions on how best to get rid of him?

Thanks!

fish trap or bottle with some food in it... Somethin like a hermit or some mysis should work. After you get it out, I'll take it! Lol

Aloha,

Try to determine it's home. If it's living in a hole in a rock that you can reach, take a small stick and jab it into the rock, twisting and poking around to crush the little bugger. If the rock can be removed, so much the better for twisting the stick all around in the hole. Sorry if this is too graphic but these pests require drastic action. The mantis traps sold at LFS rarely work. The pop bottle trap phys/Paul mentioned, works much better. Below is a pic on how it goes together. Use a bottle appropriate to the size of the animal being trapped. A water bottle would be better in this case than a 2 liter soda bottle. Use 3 or 4 stitches of fishing line to connect the inverted top to the main body and one of the stitches with a long end hanging over the top of the tank for easy retrieval of the bottle. (For larger animals, like a large fish cut off the bottle neck.) Place the opening right next to the Mantis Shrimps front or back door with a small piece of raw shrimp inside as bait. Make it as easy as possible for the shrimp to go inside by placing the opening next to a rock. I often place a rock inside to keep the bottle in place and may not even bait it for several days to allow the Mantis time to become accustomed to the traps presence. If this does not catch the Mantis overnight, the bait may have to be changed.

I believe this technique is also discussed along with more tricks of use in the WMAS Reefkeeping Tips linked below.

I've managed to corner them before and net them up after the lights go out but they are fast little buggers.

I have trapped crabs by getting a heavy drinking glass and putting a piece of shrimp in the bottom. put the glass against a rock so it can get to the top.  He climbed into the cup and couldn't climb out.  It only took once.

That works awesome for crabs, but Mantis can swim right out of the glass/jar.
