I think my father-in-laws fish have velvet. do these fish need pulled out and treated or can they stay in the reef?

If you want to treat them, they need to be pulled out. There's no in-tank treatment for velvet. Usually by the time people realize fish have velvet, the parasite has populated the fish to the point where recovery is difficult (if not impossible for most hobbyists).

Thanks. I thought it was ick and we were going to pull them and quarantine them for treatment. Do all the fish need pulled? We have lost both a powder blue and an engineer goby to this sickness.. the reason I think it is velvet is because there was what looked like a furry coat coming off the goby. I wish I had pics to share. What is the best treatment for these fish?

I would pull all of the fish. I lost 6 fish one two days to velvet. I threw survivors into a copper quarantine for 10 weeks and have quarantined all new fish since then.
If you have pics could you post them? Velvet is usually more of a sheen or coating over the fish's body rather than a furry coat. Also, are any of the fish showing difficulty breathing or breathing rapidly? Velvet usually infects the gills first.

I can take some of the clowns tonight they are not looking anything like the goby. I pulled the clowns out last night and put them in my quarantine I am going to try and catch the rest. The blue tang is the only one I have seen breathing heavy but she is always hiding in her cave.
