I bought a masked swallowtail angel (genicanthus semifasciatus) online, and ever since I started acclimating her, she has been floating like she has an air bubble in her belly. She is breathing pretty normal, and at times will try to swim downward, but always ends up floating to the top. I have her in an acclimation box to keep her from getting pushed against a power head or something. I tried reading up on swim bladder issues and all the cases I read about sounded different than this. Any idea what it might be? Or what I can do to help her? Thanks in advance

I would have to guess a swim bladder problem. If it is a deep water species it could be the way it was collected. I don't know of anything you can do for it.

I have to agree. It is most likely a swim bladder.  Sometimes they will be ok, just swim weird.  But it usually wont go away.

I was going to say, the best thing you can do if you bought it online is try get them to live up to their live arrival guarantee if that is still in force.

Yeah, luckily it was still in the period that they guarantee them, so they are refunding me my money. Might have to try a different source for another one, if I can find one.

Just curious, why try another source? It sounds like you got taken care of?

There's a chance that the fish wasn't collected properly and that's why it had the swim bladder issue. The vendor I got the fish from only has a 5 day guarantee, and I worry that the fish barely survives to that point and I'm out a lot of money... Plus they don't have anymore in stock

I'd guess it is likely the swim bladder issue was due to the collection process/procedures. I think this is as much a luck of the draw as anything. Observation at the LFS before you buy helps. Especially with the deep water and/or rare species.

Now to insert (more of) my opinion here... The most important thing to me is being taken care of by the LFS.

I believe you can pop a distended swim bladder and it will heal and the fish can be just fine, but this is more knowledge from fishing.... might be hard with a small specimen.

Then again, this could all be pixie dust and fantasy cause who the hell knows what happens to a fish you throw overboard back into the sea...
