It's some kind of encrusting montipora but beyond that I'm not sure what it'd be called.

Likely a really browned-out Montipora confusa or Montipora vietnamesis.

Ok, there's no way to tell the difference between M. spongodes, M. vietnamesis, and M. confusa from that picture. In fact, to get a positive ID between those three it would take killing a piece of the coral for a skeletal analysis...and even then it would be difficult. Please consult Veron's Corals of the World for more information on this.

Why do you think it's M. spongodes rather than M. confusa or M. vietnamesis...especially since identification down to the species level between the three is impossible without skeletal analysis according a the foremost coral ID expert?

I just searched up all three of those types and they all look really really really close...........

Exactly - there are many species of coral that look pretty much identical on the surface, and without having bare dry skeleton and (sometimes) knowing where the coral came from, it may be impossible to get a 100% ID.
Just like the whole naming insanity with corals, many wholesalers, LFS, and divers mis-ID the corals, or just genericize them. To further complicate matters, corals (and other creatures) are recategorized all the time as well (like acanthophyllia dehayesiana was several different names before its current ID.)
