I've been thinking on and off about getting a dwarf lion for my 90G reef. I finally decided the he wouldn't really pose a threat to any of my current animals. I was at Pet Village recently and saw they had a bunch of dwarf zebra lions I had to snag one for myself. I've had him for a couple of weeks now and he's doing great. So far I have fed him a few ghost shrimp. Does anyone know if there are any good marine live foods available? Eventually, I want to get him eating at least some frozen, but I'm in no hurry - I'd rather take it slowly.
Anyway, I was going to post an image of the lion, but apparently the WMAS server is being wierd and telling me I don't have sufficient permission (which it also did when I tried to change my profile signature). Awesome! I love my lion and I also got it from bird world. I have had really good luck feeding him frozen krill and he will even take mysis if he's really hungry. I don't know if you have an open top tank or not but my buddy who also has one got home tonight to find his dried up on the carpet :-( they are a super fun fish to have though! I dont know about marine live foods but I feed my volitan ghost, and guppies. He also takes about anything else I put in there. Frozen krill, mysis, blood worms, flake, dried krill. Hes like a garbage disposal. ------------- 150 gallon Reef Millcreek Utah |

I have had two lion's. One died because he wouldnt eat but the other i had for a long time. He would eat anything. Usually Silver Sides or home made food. He also liked damsels lol. |

Do any of you that have bought lionfish know if it is common to find lionfish that are already trained to take frozen foods? I don't have a setup to support live foods currently, but I would really like to have a lionfish.

Usually no they are not trained to eat frozen before you buy unless you buy from someone who has had one in their home for a long time - although some lions take to frozen pretty fast and some are a ton more stubborn.
The setup I used for live food before I got mine on frozen was just a mason jar with an air bubbler in it and a bunch of ghost shrimp. Easy and cost me nothing as I had everything in the house already. ------------- None at the moment Soon: 72 Gallon Bowfront |

Petco, Petsmart - Animal Ark in Orem also carries them. I usually go to the Petsmart on University because they have them the cheapest (33 cents). I've got my dwarf in my office 24G Aquapod. Its tank mates are: 2 clowns, yellow coris wrasse, 6 line wrasse, coral banded shrimp, peppermint shrimp, loads of snails and hermit crabs, horseshoe crab. He has never been aggressive towards anything in my tank. However i do keep him well fed, i think that is key with keeping them friendly with the other tank mates. ------------- Red Sea Reefer 625 XXL |

The p. shrimp is too big for him and he doesn't seem to want to swallow a whole crab or snail shell. Maybe if he were much bigger. The smallest fish I have are some green chromis (about an inch long) and he hasn't shown any interest in them. I did have a little green banded goby that I'm afraid he did eat. I didn't catch him in the act, but I haven't seen the goby for several weeks, which is highly unusual. Really, with any lionfish I've always understood that they'll eat any moving animal they can fit in their mouth. As long as their tank mates are bigger than that they should be left alone since lions are quite peaceful. ------------- 90G Mixed Reef |
