I have had a Rio1700 on my 60g as a return pump. I'm not really happy with the amount of water that it moves. So, I swapped it out this evening for my backup Sicce Syncra 3.5 which is supposed to be a silent pump(hah!) Rated at 634gph it moves tons more water than the Rio 1700. However, the noise is just too much!
First any chance this will reduce over time? Second, what are some recommendations on good/silent quality submersible pumps? It really can't be much bigger than 123mm (4.9") x 85mm (3.4") x 105mm (4.2") Thanks! Really the width of the pump is mostly limited. |

Eheim pumps are very quiet and reliable but they are not cheap. You might be able to find a Mag pump that would fit but they put off to much heat IMO. -------------

you could put a computer mouse pad under the pump, more than likely your touching the glass with the pump and its vibrating. ------------- The time we enjoy wasting isn't wasted time!!!! |

I agree. Sufficient soft material in between the pump and the hard surface of the
aquarium goes a long way to reduce vibration noise. Do you remember my
suspended reef? The Closed Loop pump was located on a shelf suspended
from the top of the stand by four metal coil springs. When it comes to overflow noise, if you are using a durso, gurgle blaster or similar design, they are still too noisy for me. There is a different design which is absolutely quiet. It involves a valve, preferably a gate valve and a simple screen around the drain pipe. This design is so absolutely quiet that if I didn't look over at the tank in my living room, I wouldn't know it was there. I run durso standpipes in mine and don't have much of a noise issue. You do still hear some water running but not much.
