I was just wondering how often people use AC. Is it good to run 24/7? Does it remove some of the trace elements?

It does remove trace elements, but a small monthly water change usually takes care of it.  I run carbon 24/7 and change it out every month.

I was running it 24/7, but after reading an artical in coral mag I'm second guessing myself, whether it is really necessary. My thoughts are maybe run it for a week every month. After all if everything is running good then all the AC is doing is removing things that you really want in your water. Maybe I'm missing something please chime in!

I run mine 24/7 also... I think that the benefits, out weight the cons by a long shot. Plus carbon also removes color pigment, to make water be crystal clear

Before 2 weeks elapses AC is pretty much exhausted and cannot remove any more organic chemicals. After that it just becomes a part of the biofiltration. I run AC for 1-2 weeks monthly.

Good thread. I was told it does more harm than good but it sounds like running it partially works better than not.. Thanks!

AC does no harm to your system, and is very beneficial. It absorbs tons of harmful compounds; particularly the ones that corals put into the water to engage in "chemical warfare" with one another.

There is old info out there that says AC, if used continuously, can cause LLE (Lateral Line Erosion) disease. Not true.
