So, has anyone thought of trying 3 or 4 of these over a tank? I'm far from knowledgeable about this topic but I saw these at Lowe's and started wondering if they'd work for a tank. I've also seen blue ones at Marine Depot for around $100. I saw these last time I was at lowes, I'm pretty sure they are only like 3500 K, which is the wrong spectrum for what we need, I think its even too low for a fuge light. for a comparison the metal halide bulb I have is 14000 K, some even use 20000 K. Which all translates into more blue light, less red light (in my limited, oversimplified mind!) Maybe one day they will increase the spectrum. I think compact fluorescent bulbs (the twisty kind) had the same progression and now we can get them in like 8000 k.

Ya I think those are the wrong spectrum, you would need blue to balance the color out. and they dont seem like they would cover that big of an area. I wouldnt waste my money on them, I would buy something that works. I have a par38 LED spotlight from nano tuners over a 12 gallon, it has 5 led's, 2 white and 3 blues, for a 20k look. I wasn't really planning on using them on my tank. I just figured I'd check to see if anyone else had thought of it. I am considering using one for my refuge though. Would it work? ------------- 21G Reefer Nano |

Still too expensive, and probably not the best color for marine algal growth. For the Refugium, I would stick with the $7 PC twist bulb (daylight color) in the $5 cone reflector. I know a guy that uses the twist PC's in combination with actinic fluorescent tubes.
