Hi all, I need to get my 65 gallon glass aquarium drilled for bulkheads. Does anyone know where I can get a couple 1 3/4" holes drilled in it's bottom ?
Thanks, Calvin

If it's tempered glass (I hope I'm right on the term) then you can't drill it. Otherwise, Moutnain Shadow Marine (Centerville) drills holes (be warned....it's been said that they can bit on the unfreindly side). Also, Jon Finch (JFinch) did a killer job on his tank and may be persuaded to assist.

I'm always hesitant to speak up when it comes to drilling someone else's tank. But, if you can release me from any liability and have a couple frags I'll do it for you. Or some of the LFSs can do it.

MSM will drill but won't guarantee any tank that wasn't purchased from them. (ie, I'd go with Jon)

The bottom is almost always tempered glass and unless it specifically says that it is not then I would assume the it is.
Having found this out the hard way myself, I would recommend drilling near the top on one of the sides.

Sorry Fire Shrimp! I didn't see your question. I took it down to MSM (fairly long drive) because they said they could drill it. Randy was busy (no big deal) so we left it. The next day, they said they couldn't drill it because it was unknown material. So we picked it up & brought it home. They said they would order one in, and it took a while. So we asked if we could bring one from Aquatic Dreams. I didn't make that phone call. I guess it was pretty bad. I can understand their point, though. But they said they won't drill a tank that isn't purchased there. So it all worked out, we bought a 55g from them, with holes drilled, etc. We do have a good system.

MSM drilled a used tank for me. Of course, I understood that the tank might be ruined (because I didn't know if the bottom was tempered or not) and I told them, "go ahead, I want a new one anyway."
Too bad, but they had no trouble drilling my used tank (three holes and an overflow) so I didn't get a new tank after all.
MSM staff has been friendly and patient with me from day one, without exception. And no one knows less about this hobby than I do right now. I love their classes too.
I'm sorry that others feel differently, but I'm a loyal customer for life and had to speak up for my buds at MSM. I'm sure other LFS are great too, but so far, I wouldn't know!
I had a bad day once. Some people think it hasn't ended yet.

Wow...I have probably spent $1000 dollars in the last 6 months at MSM. There is one person there that treats me well; the rest do not. I had another bad experience today with them and decided I will never go back again.

clismi, I'm glad you had a positive experience. I think many many many people have had experiences like jakeh7056. Unfortunately many of our club members will never go there again. But then again, I guess it is MSM's fault, so we shouldn't feel bad.

Hmmm, bashing? I admit that it is coming from the top (since I posted) but I don't know if I want to say bashing, or sticking up for my members. As president, I hate hearing from people (like Jakeh7056 whom I have never even met) who say there were treated badly somewhere.
I'm sorry Troy if my post sounded bad, I just thought I was saying what has happened, didn't realize that it was a sore subject. I'm glad Jakeh7056 made his comment, isn't it good for everyone to hear those experiences?

Troy,
I should have also mentioned something else. I've spent the last hour or so thinking about this, and I can't recall ever having a single PM or email or post on this board or anything where someone said "I went to From the Sea and Rick cursed at me and made me feel bad" or "I went to Aquatica and Shawn treated me like an idiot" or anything like that. Even the stores that are a little hazy with us where people make complaints "the Aquarium over charges" "Shawn doesn't like the club" or whatever else people often say; no one has ever said that they were treated poorly and wouldn't ever go back.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I can't remember anyone ever saying it about any other store???

Hi, Troy. I notice from your joined date that your kinda new. Don't
be mad at Adam, 'cause you don't know the history.
We rarely go there 'cause it's on the other side of the world for us,
but the few times I've been there, the staff were very condescending.
Maybe, in person, I'll tell you my story.
Unless, were you the guy who scoffed when I said I was in the
WMAS?
Randy is always nice to me......I wonder why the rest of the staff
doesn't seem to like me? When I go there, I feel a kind of underling
resentment, and this is from people who don't even know me. Other
stores smile and greet us when we walk up or ask a question.....
I'm going to go see Kris today......Need some stinkin' ghost
shrimp! Again!!

You all need to stop sending your pre-conceived attitudes about MSM around to every newbie that is just seeking friendly advice. When some one asks a question, don't take advantage of the situation to bash MSM. All the guy asked was where to get holes drilled not for your pre-conceived attitude or feelings like "there a bit on the unfriendly side" as Gonzo stated. Everyone does not share the same conservative attitudes so let others decided for themselves. I have never been treated poorly by anyone at MSM or Randy.
I just don't think that you "Adam" as the president should be delivering these type of messages. When was the last time you were at MSM to base your personal knowledge upon everyone? Negative attitudes do not help anyone.

Hi everyone I was just curious, what does everyone not like about MSM? I am new to the area and to this board for that matter. The people at MSM sent me here and now I am wondering perhaps why? Do they know what is said on this board about them? I bet not or they surely would not have referred me here. I have visited all the shops in the area for stuff needed for my tank that I just set up again and I must say MSM appeared to be the best around. Am I missing something? Did something happen that I need to know about? I mean they have a nice clean store dedicated only to saltwater, trust me that is a huge plus coming from what I was used to. They seem to REALLY know what they are doing. The staff has always been attentive and courteous with my needs. There livestock is very healthy and priced lower than expected. I recently attended one of their MSM U classes and must admit I wish I had found out about them sooner, I learned a lot. The only thing I found odd is that they are only open, well for retail, Thursday on. I mean the store in my town in Arizona did dent hold a candle in any of the above respects so perhaps Im just wearing rose (anemone) colored glasses. What are the reasons for the club not shopping there? And Adam you being the president of the club, shouldnt you see if there is a problem, if there is something that can be done to make it work. I mean I would hate to see such a great store not support a local club and vise versa. They are the reason I found this club and I would not want that to change. Perhaps instead of listing complaints that are clearly one sided because I dont see them posting here, we try to find out the situation before burning them at the stake? I have just seen many stores closedown in AZ due to Internet pricing, bad reputations, and poor quality in goods. We have a great selection of stores here locally, trust me its not the norm and you dont want that gone.
Just my thoughts and I would love to hear everyones views and opinions on this.
Thanks
Pete

From my standpoint, I have come to recognize the differences between persoalities at each LFS and try to adjust my attitude accordingly, when in that store. I was asked recently why I continue to buy at MSM when they speak negatively behind my back. All I can say is "Ignorance is bliss!"
MSM matched another LFS killer price on 6' VHO tubes when I arrived 5 minutes after closing last week. They are good to me, so I don't really care other than curiosity, what they say about me behind my back.
Besides, Troy and I both live too close to MSM to ignore them! One thing to remember is that Randy likes to critique. period. Don't take it personal.

I have been following this thread on and off and while I have never been to MSM ( 'cause as it was put before ...it's on the other side of the world..) I would have to say that it doesn't suprise me that people have had these kinds of experiences with a local FS. I live here in SLC and there are some places that I do not go to very often and one place that I go to look but make it a point to let them know that I am not there to buy (several bad experiences in a row with the staffs condasending attitudes), I also have another place that I go several times a week and though it is a small place I usally see something that I have to bring home. I think alot of this whole thing people have to realize is that everyone has personality and not everyone is compatable, myself included. I think it is no suprise that someones' store might have too much "personality" for some of us to stomach and others find the atmosphere there fine. And I don't conside it bashing......If I every find myself up on that end of the planet I might have to go into MSM to find out myself if the place is like some of the ones down here in SLC, and then add it to the lists I have for No and Yes stores. (sorry for the long post)

I don't think it would be true to say that the club doesn't shop there, Pete. I'm pulling that from your post above. Some don't, and some do. Our tank works great. They listed to what we wanted to do in the future with this tank (use it as a wall) and suggested the downspouts. In addition, they were willing to put up with me calling & calling. I'll bet their classes are good. It's great that people have lots of options!
I'm mentioning the good things here, because I mentioned some of the bad things in an earlier post. We dropped off the tank July 2nd, and it was supposed to take "a week or so" to get it back. Got it back in December. Initially was told that our tank wasn't worth the time and effort to fix up - that we should get rid of it (donate it to an aquarium, as I recall), and that we could just buy a better one. This was after we explained that we had hauled it around Europe for 7 years waiting for the day when we could set it up. Was supposed to take 4 hours to buff out the scratches. Billed for 11 hours, and they gave me a 50% discount for taking so long on that part. So we still paid for 5.5 hours, and waited months. Made several wasted trips, etc. The story goes on and on, and I don't really like to tell it. It's frustrating to think back on it. I'm female, I have a master's degree, I did my own 250g plumbing (was told there was NO way I would ever manage it), I pestered them, I had a massive dream of a gorgeous tank, I was new to this whole deal, I didn't know about WMAS, and it was fairly hit and miss as to whether I would be treated condescendingly, or with contempt. I spent thousands, and I have a nice tank. So there's some of the good with the bad, and I'm sure if I lived closer and went to classes, etc., that things would be different. I have attempted to demonstrate some balance here.

I like MSM as does the wife. They are not at the end of the planet or the
world as many of you note. They are one of the closest shops near to me.
The coral that I have bought from them has been fair priced and of
excellent quality. I have no idea who Randy is . . . The staff has been very
nice and helpful, I almost feel bad for the information I have pumped out
of them. We read and try to make good choices, but they have helped us
to make better choices, to protect our investment and enjoy a better
aquatic experience. I would have no problem recommending them to
others, short work week for retail or not. As long as one knows it does
not matter.
I understand personalities to some extent and they will be what they will
be. How is it said . . . "Stuff Happens!" Well it does, experiences differ as
will the quality of the experience for each individual . . . As long as it
works for me, I will return.
I do have a bone to pick with a down town store . . . lol.

That would be a figure of speech Suzy of the Presidency . . . to me SLC
(Salt Lake City) would be from Bountful to Draper, hence 33 South would
be Downtown to me. I also used two words instead of one in down town .
. . you might want to point that out as well. You may wish to point out
that I am a newer member as well . . . .
I have no problems with the positions taken here pro or con, it is as the
user experianced it. Everyone is right, everyone shop where they please.
There will be no minds changed here . . .
