Okay for you 20K XM users out there (Shane, Eric, Carl, Ryan,....) my understanding is that none of you are adding actinics with that. In fact you tell me it would be way too blue if you did. So do any of you have a morning/evening lighting set up? Or do you just run your halide for like 14 hours a day? Just wonderin' Adam ------------- Come to a meeting, they�re fun! |

I let the sunlight do my morning light, I don't turn my halides on until noon. At night, it's just, "LIGHTS OUT, LOCK 'EM DOWN'. Okay one more question. Do you guys have a piece of glass or acrylic between your bulb and the water? Do you worry about water splashing on the bulb? Please share ideas. Adam ------------- Come to a meeting, they�re fun! |

I run Ushio 20k ... they come on at 10 and go off at 8, no actinics. I am running HQI so I run a 1/8" piece of tempered glass to shield the UV. |

| I also run the 20k XM's one on at 8am off at 10pm and the other on at 9am off at 11. No glass or acrylic and no I am not to worried about them getting splashed on. |

Adam, how close to the water are you planning to place the bulb? I think I would be worried about water, and with the HQI bulbs dont you think you should have some kind of UV shield on it? I,ve had 2 96 w pc bulbs break because of just the mist from my tank and at 40 bucks a pop that hurts |

My bulb is probably 4 inches above the water. I've seen how much salt builds up on my compacts, and that was why I was asking. However, I also thought about the bulb shattering and then thought... "why not put a piece of glass there, nothing to lose". So still trying to get a better feel. Adam ------------- Come to a meeting, they�re fun! |

| If you look at the tests done by Sanjay on the amount of light that gets blocked/reflected off just by adding glass it is actually alot more than you would think. If I didnt have to have the glass I probably wouldnt. |

A little occassional cleaning O' the bulbs will get rid of the spray ans subsequent salt spackle. The way I figure, for the shatter thing to really happen it needs to be a grand and rapid cooling of the bulb. My bulbs are about 4 inches above the water. They get splashed, burn hair, etc. Nothing yet and I don't see it as a concern unless something REALLY goes wrong. ------------- In Syracuse "I believe that forgiving them is God's function. I did ALOT of research on that topic. Some HQI/DE bulbs will actually have UV shielding built in, but most dont. They let out UV A, B, and even C. What did it for me was realizing that my MH bulb was putting out the same UV light I was using in my UV sterilizer to kill things. Check out this link. Yup, I say you'd be a bit crazy to operate an HQI bulb without proper UV protection (even if you don't care about your fish/coral consider your own rods and cones).
