Subject: Euroreef skimmer bubbles... ?
Date Posted: April 04 2004 at 2:38pm

I just got my new/used euroreef skimmer. It was putting out a lot of micro bubbles out of the output. I did some recommendations from people on RC, i.e. cleaning out the venturi with vinegar, the water level is perfect. I even got new foam for the output, but it seems like the bubbles just run through the foam. Does anyone have any thoughts? My sump is too small to run baffles.

Thanks!

Shane -  Did you just put in any additives(chemicals) or feed?(I've seen EuroReefs go nuts after this)  If not I might try putting the neck(for water level) all the way down right now as well as remove the foam to see if you get any different results.  If so then slowly move the neck up until you start to produce the bubbles.  Just my experience with EuroReefs.

It is producing great skimmate - it is the micro bubbles that are making their way back into the sump that is the problem. Without the foam on the output the bubbles just go straight into the sump and up to the display tank. I have tried the pipe all the way up and all the way down, and everywhere in between. Ryan - did yours have any problem with bubbles making their way back into the sump? Oh yeah - havent added any additives today and I had already fed many hours before I put the skimmer in. Wierd! :)

Try adjusting the tube with the fuzzy gray sponge on it.  Raise it, and your bubble troubles should go away.

Hmmm, not sure what else to tell you Shane.  I never did have any huge issues with bubbles into my main tank.  I have seen with some skimmers after somebody adds something like Algone or that product to remove Cyano(can't remember the name) that a skimmer goes nuts creating micro bubbles.

Skimmers can take 24 hrs or so to settle in.  Be patient.  Maybe there is just a lot of proteinaceous waste in your tank.  (That's a tricky word; I hope I got it right.  I also gained an Intelligence level because I used it in a sentence. )

JUST BE PATIENT LIKE MARCUS SAID.

I BOUGHT MINE ABOUT A MONTH AGO AND IT DID THE SAME THING FOR ABOUT 8 TO 12 HOURS BEFORE IT SETTLED DOWN.

Sweet thanks guys! My coral was just getting ticked at all the bubbles in the display. I guess I'll just give it a bit and keep my fingers crossed.

Thanks!

I will be purchasing a skimmer in the next week or so .... is the euroreef skimmer a good purchase? (55 gallon tank\15 gallon sump) About how much do they cost?

Around $225+ for the model I got, which would probably be the best model for your size tank. Other than the bubbles - so far so good. I read nothing but good things about this skimmer, so we'll see how it fares.

BTW - my model is the ES5-2

Mine is the ES5-5 also and I have a 65 gal tank and I cant believe the gunk it takes out of the water compared to my old skimmer.

Last I heard is that Randy at MSM had the ES5-2 for 10% off of 229.99, thats what I paid for mine 5 weeks ago, and its rated for tanks up to 150 gal.

It does have about an 8 inch footprint, if that is of any concern for your sump.I highly recommend it.

What exactly is a "footprint?"

The actual space required for the unit to fit into on a given area. To demonstrate, plant your foot on the floor. The space around your foot is the footprint or the space that it occupies. It applies to anything, even other bodyparts.

I bought an ASM-G1 skimmer from The Aquarium. It has been running for 3 days now, and the microbubbles are still very bad in my display tank. I have tried adjusting the output of the skimmer, but I had no luck. The wierd thing is that I am not seeing the bubble problem in my sump, only my display tank. Any ideas? I unplugged the powerhead with the venturi fitting for the overflow (just to give it a try) and it seemed to help a little.

Can you add tubing to the outlet of the skimmer and route the water flow to another place in your sump?
I have a Turbofloater 1000 skimmer. I added tubing to both outlets and forced the water (and any micro bubbles) to a location further away from my return pump. I also added an elbow to the tubing to direct the water flow straight up. This forces the bubbles to the surface.

It already is on the farthest side of the sump away from the return pump. I will try to direct the water flow straight up right now. Thanks for the idea

Just a thought... if you are not seeing microbubbles in your sump and it is only from the main tank, it would appear to me that your are sucking air in your return.

I have found in my sump that adding filter material is the best way for me to get rid of the microbubbles. Basically, just put the filter material between the source and the return pump.
