Jonh, stop by, I modded mine three weeks ago, I can show you how easy it is. my orp on my tank is now staying at 380-390 the ozone turned off at 220, this really works well.
before I modded this skimmer(a baby asm) the best that I could do orp wise was a 200-220 with the ozone running.
If i run the skimmer wet it fills every three days, if I run it on the dry side it is filling 1/4 to 1/2 full per week, with this dark nasty gunk that stinks, the corals are doing great.

yes, the safest way would be to have a extra impeller for it, but for mine I modded a different pump( that I had a extra impeller for, just in case) made a venturi for it and let it rip, thing is it is working so well that I am using the old pump for water circulation in the sump now.
you do not need much of the mesh at all to do the mod, I was only able to get one layer in the pump, they are using two layers on reef central.
I cut most of the fins off of the impeller, and used the remaining fins to super glue the mesh to, way easy.

I did the mesh mode to my coralife 220 and it made a monster difference. the best mod I have done so far to my ASM is to add a drain and a drain hose. sure beats having to take the collection off every day or two

I would add a drain to mine if I could find a easy way to keep the neck clean, I need to pull it to clean the neck, I'd might as well drain it too.

Here are a couple of pics of the mod that I did to my needle wheel. My motor had two rows of needle wheels. I took the first row off and left the second. I didn't break any of the pins off. I used 8lb fishing line to secure the enkamat to the needlewheel and then trimmed off the edges so they were flush with the needle wheel. The thing works like a champ. I have close to doubled the skimate I was pulling out with the skimmer before the mod. I also have enough enkamat for a couple more mods if anyone is interested, just shoot me a PM.

Just letting ppl know about the mesh mod. Do not mod it unless you have a kilowatt where you can measure how much electricity it is pulling. there is alot of talk on reef central that ppl had modded there skimmers and after 6 months after the mod there pumps are burning out.

I cant seem to find the thread anymore but I belive it was on the sedra pumps. I also modded my skimmer nothing yet but Its going on 2 months now. Aslong as your not over driving the pump with the mesh wheel it should be fine I was told.

I read on RC that some people are having problems with the mesh mod plugging up. I was planning on doing it to a smaller custom skimmer I am building but was a little worried about that. Anyone here have any problems with the mesh or has it all been good results?

How do you overdrive a pump? The only way I can think of doing
that is to increase the voltage, that would probably fry a pump quick.

By modifying the needlewheel you can overdrive the pump. If its rubbing against the walls of the pump or the modified wheel is to heavy I guess. But there has been a discussion about this on RC. They advise doing no mods to your skimmer unless you have a Kilo watt meter and a air meter. I read somewhere that someone modded the needlwheel and there pump was drawing 25w more then it was rated for.

that may have been the group that was creating the double layers? I used a heaver pump than the original, but that is good to know, I will get my amp meter out and check the amp draw.
