| I just bought a 175 gal. tank but it is not drilled, does anyone in Utah County drill tanks? Or should I just use the over the edge overflows, I havn't used the overflows before. Also I was wondering about drilling the back of the tank near the surface instead of the bottom any problems doing this or should I just drill the bottom like my others? |

Drill the top back, less chance of it being tempered, and you gain a
lot of real estate by using small box overflows. Grab some black
acrylic from Regional and come on over, we can knock out some boxes in
no time. You may want to talk to jfinch and see what he likes
doesn't like about his overflow boxes. In fact, he may have a

If it is not tempered, I would get it drilled in the top corners. The HOB overflow boxes can be noisy. They are also more likely to flood. I had issues adjusting the flow of the HOB overflow every time I did a water change. I never had a flood but could easily see the potential for one. If you get it drilled at the top vs. the bottom, you don't have to put in an overflow box inside the tank. All you'll need are bulkheads, elbows and gaurds. | Thanks for the replys. Just got back from a little trip so I havn't checked the site for the last few days. How do you tell if it is tempered? One of the reasons I was thinking about drilling the back was to free up the bottom real estate and also the no worry about losing the prime on the hob. I just havn't seen too many tanks this way and was wondering about the disadvantages to this. |

The boxes will actually skim the water surface and without them you will get a bit of an oil slick on the top.

When I had the HOB overflow, I still got the "oil slick" on the surface. True the box didn't have it immediately around the box, but the rest of the tank had it. My problem was I only had 1 return line and it was not pointed at the surface.
As long as your return lines are aggitating the surface water, you won't get the "oil slick".
