I thought I'd post some pictures and a little info on a 10 gallon tank that I'm setting up for my office.
I liked the way Adam's tank looks with rock glued to the back glass so I thought I'd incorporate a similar look. But rather then use Weld-on 40 acrylic glue, I decided to use polyurethane glue. Polyurethane glue dries into a safe, inert foamy consistancy. And it's very very strong and will glue almost anything to anything. And it's fairly cheap.
All the necessary parts.
 Squeeze out enough glue to wet the whole back glass.
 Then spread the glue out across the whole back. I then added a little extra glue to the back sides of the rock and coral just for good measure. Set the rock where you want it to be and dump sand around the rock to hold it in place. The sand will support coral fragments and rock even at odd angles to the back glass.
 Then the whole side is covered in about an inch of caribsea sand and allowed to cure over night.
 After it's cured, I removed the sand and washed everything down with the sprayer on the kitchen sink. If your wife isn't as understanding as mine, you could use the garden hose
 . (that dark line is just a shadow from the front edge)

 You can see where there is no sand due to not enough glue. I should have used more then I did, but it should look just fine after a few months coralline growth.

Jon- ah too late! If I had known you were going to do this I would have sent you some photos. I did the same thing (different glue) but I put in a back wall across the entire tank, about 3 inches from the back. Made slits in the top and had a built in overflow. I really liked that idea for a 10 gal.
I think Jake has the built in overflow on his 10 gal tank in his living room.
Anyway that is way cool. I'm sure you'll love it.

Adam, I actually thought about that too but I think it would take too much room from the display. I'm still in the thinking stages about how to keep the power chords (PH, heater maybe) hidden or looking nice.
Suzy... I still don't like seahorses  . Actually it's not that I don't like 'em, it's just that I don't/won't have the time to devote to 'em. I'm thinking a small occelaris, maybe a damsel and something like a rainsfordi goby. That is exactly the idea I had for the new 90g for the bare bottom. I know Jim Perry did that with cement on the bottom of his big tank. Did you have any glue show through the sand? How long did you wait before applying the sand? How much did the glue puff up?

Fax, I spread the sand right after I spread the glue. I used well dried sand so the bubbling/foaming was kept to a minimum (and if you stack an inch or two of sand on top of the glue, I don't think the foam can form as easy). You can't see any glue, it's all sand and there are enough bulges to make it look somewhat natural. If I wanted more mounds/ridges I'd mist the glue with a little water before adding the sand, only spread the sand about 1/2" thick and sprinkle more on as the foam pushes through. Ok, now on to the canopy. I had a workhorse 5 ballast sitting on my shelf doing nothing so I figured I use it. It can power 4 36 watt compact flourecent bulbs. I didn't think I could actually fit 4 bulbs over this little tank so I decided to go with three 36 watt bulbs. That should be enough light. I'll show what I did through these pictures.
I started by building a box out of black 1/8" acylic. This is the top view (never mind the reflection, it's my 125 gal):
 I didn't want the canopy to just sit on the top of the tank so I built in a couple stand-offs to elevate it above the top brace. The stand-offs are removeable or replaceable if I decide to elevate or lower it.
 This is how the standoffs sit on the top of the tank.
 With the acrylic work done, I needed a reflector. I got a small piece of relfective aluminum and bent it to this shape:
 Here it is all put together with bulbs:
 And lit up.
 Here's a back view of the canopy/tank.
 And finally the front view.

Add a few plants growing up the back rock and sand as a background. Maybe some a sparse sea grass bed....now you got me thinking.

Room for error! At 83 your tank can run well and actually do fabulous. But it doesn't take much to kill off animals at that temperature. They are running on full power. Fish get stressed easy, parasites fight fast, oxygen levels are lower (even though Jon doesn't think so). You just don't have much leeway. Some corals are really hurting at 83.
Obviously I'd stick to 74-78 if I could, but sometimes 83 is just what happens here in the summer.
Trying to think of a good analagy..... it's like driving your car to work at 120 mph. It is a great idea. You can get their in half the time. But if someone changes lanes in front or if the road is icy or whatever, going 40 mph will surely be a better way to go.

BTW Adam, I'm not sure I've said that warmer water will have higher O2 levels. O2 saturation goes up as temperature goes down. I might have said that I don't think it really matters because the difference in saturation is only about 0.5 ppm between 70 and 80 F. Not sure that 0.5 ppm is significant. Do you think it is? Oh and I personally get nervous when my tank hits 83F.
Well, I had to buy a heater. The last couple mornings the tank has been at 68F in the morning. The lights do heat it up to 77F by the time I go home (the tank's at work). No, you never said that. Sorry, I mis-spoke there. What I meant is that Jon says the difference doesn't matter.

My tank runs at 83 EVERY day! I wish it didn't. I may be installing more fans, or getting a chiller soon. The evaporation is driving my wife nuts (talk about moisture in the house). I too worry with temps at 83. For me 74-78 is best.
The last couple mornings the tank has been at 68F in the morning. The lights do heat it up to 77F by the time I go home (the tank's at work).
To be honest the 68 doesn't worry me. My previous frag system (you saw it at my old place) was always at 65. But that drastic of a change up and down every day would worry me. I think the heater is a good idea.

Yeah, me too.
What I did do was used acrylic stand-offs between the canopy and the reflector so radiant heat would only heat the reflector and not the canopy. My office mates really like the idea of a tank, but they've been chomping at the bit for fish (the first day I had it set up my buddy here went to BW asking for a piranha for the tank, to surprise me... He was upset they didn't have any and even more upset when I told him piranha were not saltwater fish Last week I added the "canary in the mineshaft" zoanthids:
 They were doing fine on Monday and the tank tested zero on ammonia, the diatom bloom was about over. I added a couple snails and told my impatient officemate he could get a clown fish for it. He came back with a Firefish
. That was yesterday.
This morning I come in to find no fish in my tank. No body in the tank or on the ground. He just plan disappeared. He either jumped between when I went home and the janitors showed up and they just vacuumed him up or I have the same cleaning crew as Kull and they stole him

I hate to suggest this to the experienced reefer, but are you sure he's not just hiding? I thought my damsel had killed my firefish because I didn't see the poor guy for a week-- even during feeding. Then one day I saw him swimming happily.

I'll be selling off my home tank in the next few months (temporary hiatis) so I'll be keeping frags of all the softies out of my home tank that I want to keep. I don't know, I'm sure it'll be overstocked. But I plan 50% water changes weekly (what else am I going to do at work

My tanklessness will be temporary so I'm not planning to sell the stuff that's easy to store and could be used on the next tank. So I don't think I'll sell the skimmer, reactor, pumps or lights. Jon, What kind of sand did you use on the back? I ask because two days ago when I was setting up a 10 gal nano for my wife I decided to follow your example of gluing sand and rocks to the back... Unfortunately mine looked like crap and I ended up spending an hour last night scraping the back of the tank before setting it up  ... I guess I'm just not cut out for DIY projects like you...Awesome tank though! I used Utah Sand, but it was just too fine of a grain. It just didn't look very good. I may try something like this in the future, but next time I'm going to use a larger grain. My mind is officially boggled, I don't understand how you guys (all of you who really know what you're doing) can make your tanks look so cool... Jon that is awesome! I now have a goal of where I what I want my 10 gal to look like (mind you it will probably take me years to accomplish it, but at least I have a goal  )

It looks ok and everything appears to be growing just fine, but it won't look REAL good for another year or so. It still looks too new. I prefer the look of a mature tank with every bit of rock covered in coral or algae.

Filter? I see the power head, is that just for current? Are you using sand & rock as bio? Any mechanical?
I'd like to see how you put that canopy toghether too, is it welded or glued?

There is no filter other then water circulation from that single powerhead, a little sand and rock. I may put on a HOB powerfilter for activated carbon in the future.

you could probably put a pop-on cage style at the base of the power head. Pack it with carbon or chemipure.
It's simple and functional , I like it.

Latest round of pictures.
A couple days ago I had a blenny die in the tank and I can't find him to remove so it's in the middle of an ammonia spike and general decay. It's been very hard on the pulsing sinulara (likely dead... I should remove it) and the xenia (you can see the retracted polyps). Everything else seems to be bucking the storm ok. I'll changed 2.5 gal of water yesterday and I'll try to do another today and Monday. Anyway, here's the pics from today.

That's the first fish that's died in the tank. But I've had 6 fish jump out! It doesn't really bother me that it died, I just wish I could find it and remove it. It looks like you're having quite the luck with suicidal fish... maybe you need to have an intervention and convince them that they like water more than they do air. I've had that talk with both my diamond goby and firefish and they both seem to be pretty content staying in the water...
