I would do it throuh water changes. Never add salt directly to your main tank, as it tends to do more harm than good.
 
I had a similiar issue when I rescued my tank. I would mix the water a little strong and bit by bit brought up to what I like.
 
Now the tank is doing great.
 
Also had really bad hair algae, make sure to check the phosphates, for me they where out of control, I'm still dealing with that.

Going by the .002 per week, today I went up.002, next sunday up .002, then a week later .001 and we're golden.

Something was/is killing off the coral, and the 2 things I see that are not usual are low salt and no heater, but I've heard no heater can be ok, that and tons of hair algae.

Coral can withstand a faster change but fish can only safely withstand an increase of 0.002 per week.
