i have never dosed anything

i only run carbon

i think that the ammonia was caused by trying to add anouth fish. this is in a ten gallon so i can only have much a a bioload before my system starts to go crazy

I don't have any way of testing my alk

I am not 100% sure that any cheato actually died It may have just been that brown stringy algea on it.

What do you dose? (kalk, vinegar, vodka, calcium, iodide, ect)
How often do you dose?
When was the last time you dosed?
What filtration material/equipment do you run? (Skimmer, reactors, denitrator, GFO, Carbon, biopellets, ect)

As Nikki stated an imbalance in Alk can irritate coral making them not open fully but wouldn't cause cheato to die nor the ammonia spike but Alk is a major player in reef chemistry! Alk can control the levels of your pH, calcium, nitrates, and more.

Do you have any way of testing your Alk?

Dieing cheato is usually a sign that your Phosphates have reached 0 and that it is starving. If the cheato is dieing it is possible it could cause a spike in ammonia and also release phosphates back into the water which could feed the recent algae growth.

during my water change i did vacuum it out and i usually blow it out at least every other day, but i have done this with every water change.

i mix my water for tomorrow tonight.

Instant ocean is just fine until you start getting into crazy stonies that uptake a lot of minerals that are difficult to dose. You are fine using it.

Yes, mixing saltwater a day ahead is ideal but should not cause this sort of problem. Did you recently stir up the sand, add rock or something?

I would do 25% water changes a day for the next week. I'd also run carbon. This should help remove the toxins and help reset everything.

I have done a 50% water change and i'll try to mix the water the day before from now on hopefully my lps will pull through the frog spawn and hammer took a beating. i am praying

the guy that owns exotic reef in orem told me that it wasn't very good the eight months i have been using it it has seem pretty good. i just tested for ammonia results in a minute.

You should wait at least 24 hours after mixing salt water to use it. The ph and o2 levels are not stable right aafter mixing. However I dont think that is the problem. I use instant ocean with no probs. Who told you not to? Something must have died and is causing a chain reaction.
