I have dealt with GSM skimmer and the best thing to do is to do the gate way mod. This allow you to make very small adjustment to the water level more affectively. I had the issue on my skimmer and when I added the gateway it made my life a lot easier and the foam level was more stable.

I don't understand what you mean because that's not what I do to produce drier foam. I lower the outlet tube.
The venturi air intake can get clogged with Calcium deposits. I ream it out with a small diameter grabber screw. This allows the skimmer suck the right amount of air to produce the proper foam.
Hope this helps.

Edited by Mark Peterson - January 23 2011 at 8:26am

Have you tried cleaning the skimmer pump and air intake, even the body?... cause if less air is going thru the pump then more water, so it pushes the water higher (found this out the other day lol)
