Before you do this, call bird world.  They have 40g tanks for $30 cheaper than anywhere else, so I would assume it would be the same for larger tanks.  though be sure to get the tank with the overflow installed, it will cost you more than $20 to make yourself

Skimmer - Before removing stuff from your tank you need to give the good stuff time to build up, skimmers do remove a lot bad of stuff from your tank, but it also removes beneficial bacteria as well.  A lot of people go skimmerless, although since my tank is so small I am still not sure if I will go skimmerless or not when I get my 40g breeder up and running.

Filter socks are really iffy, they can be really good, and really bad at the same time.. If you cleaned it out every other day, it would probably be good for your tank, but since most people forget, or don't like to clean it, they just leave it out.
