To anyone who was ever interested in GARF Grunge, I've just picked up about 30 lbs. of leftover rubble rock that came from a shipment of LR to one of the LFS. It just came in today and it's free, unless you want to pay me something for my trouble. My wife thinks I'm crazy to do all this for nothing. But if I started doing it for $ it might stop being fun!

I was thinking about adding some to my refugium, how much sound I get for a 25 gal Refugium? 150 gal tank?

They suggest 1 pound per 3 gallons, but that's pretty steep, how much is enough to seed the tank?

They take LR residue from the bottom of the shipping box, well actually they take a whole box of LR and crush it up. They put it into a large shallow tank that they have had this stuff running in for years (I saw it many times years ago before they became reclusive). It is fed heavily and kept fishless so that the micro-fauna thrives and multiplies. That is Garf Grunge. It is great stuff.

A hobbyist with a healthy reef aquarium who has added this to their substrate now has most of those same organisms running, crawling, swimming and slithering around in their "live sand". hmmm.....should I get some of that stuff for my refugium? I was looking at this on eBay, but the grudge sounds alot less expensive, although this auction has more than just microfauna:

grunge isn't really sand, the two bags that i got were more broken up small pieces of rock and alot of mud. when you dump it in the tank gets very murky

i usually go through leonel at garf and i have asked if i could drive up and get it he said no! their facillity isn't safe for the public so i guess shipping is the only way!

I often visit tanks that could use some GARF Grunge. But right here in our group we have our own variety of LS with worms and bugs. Many people don't realize the benefits of sharing sand, thinking that it is somehow harmful. It is not.

If your tank substrate does not have worm trails in it, you need to find a fish nerd here on this board that will share a cup or two of their LS with worms and other organisms. Without these organisms, a reef aquarium is not reaching it's full potential of filtration and ecology. Everything grows better when the substrate is full of micro-fauna.

I'm happy to share.
