Hi All, I won a bottle of the phyto at the meeting, so I'm going to give it a second try. I have a dumb question. Which kind is this? More specifically, is this the one that can be grown in Fresh or salt water, or SW only? I split the gallon into 2 jars and topped them off with FW and they are growing fine, but I wanted to be sure. I prefer to use FW, so I don't off set my salinity as much (FW evaporates fast in my tank) ------------- Patrick |

It is an unknown species. Nannochloropsis is the species that can be grown if fresh or saltwater. I have small starts of that if you want some. -------------

I just dosed my tank and left about 1/4 in the bottle and added MORE FW. If it survives, I'll keep going. I would love to try the other as well. What part of town are you in, I'm in Sandy. ------------- Patrick |

I grew nanno in fresh water a while ago and it took a while for it to addust to the fresh water. But once it did it grew very well. The thing i dont know is how it effects your tank when you add it. Id just assume that all the cells shrivel up and die when added to the salt water. I never noticed any difference though. Im really close to you, by the cottonwood mall. -------------

I think they need to stay alive till somethong eats them or they just
detract from the tank! When they are alive, they suck up NO3, PO4 like a macro does... If you are going to add something that dies instantly, maybe you could just use concentrated paste? Adam, i think the red is growing!!!! My basement looks so festive with the gold and red and green! I love Andy and Eric and Algagen!!!!! |

I won a "live" concentrate of phyto feast from the meeting. It says it
is 5 different micros (Nano, Pavlova, Iso, Tetraselmis, and
Thallassiosira weissflogii). Do you think I could start a culture from
this? I'm already growing about 20g of the mystery micro. I also have a

I thought DT's was live... ? Did you get it at the meeting? The DT's we gave away at the meeting was in fact a new product. Here is a quote from Dennis Tagrin (Owner of DT's)- "Premium reef blend is a combination of microalgae and diatoms. The diatoms are pelagic and are not a "nuisance algae" as so many people describe diatoms. They are an important food for many reef animals and in particular, should help boost the pod population. There are thousands of species of diatoms and most are not a nuisance.Since these are not benthic and do not grow onto surfaces they will not cover anything in an aquarium, even if conditions are right for them to grow. Here is an example of how so much about algae is misunderstood; dinoflagellates are all thought to be nuisance algae, yet how many hobbyists realize that zooxanthellae are dinoflagellates. Zooxanthellae are regularly expelled by corals into the water column with no ill effect at all" |

| you could definitely start a culture from DT's as long as it is still "live" its unlikely you'll keep the _blend_ of phytos though as one will eventually out compete the others. i don't see any problem with this though and would at that to your tank! =) |

My wife won the very large stocking from the meeting. It had all kinds
of stuff in it. As far as this stuff being live, I've always taken it
with a grain of salt. Sure, at one time it was live. I guess I'll try
to start a culture from both phyto feast and dt's and see if either of
them will last.

| if either of them has any significant amount of live cells hopefully both should start for you! they phytofeast has HUGE cell count and claims to be live so hopefully it will start up nicely for you! |

Even if they grow, they will be a mix? Then one will outcompete the
others and you will again be left with a mystery alga! I love diatoms! They grow pods fast, grow quickly and totally rock! |

I think nanno will win, too. The others are more fragile, I think. But, it
could be another 'mystery" algae! |
