Well, we have changed our minds again. My dad and I are getting a new 55 gal. tank to replace the one that we bought from susan (better stand, it's new.....really no other reasons than that). While we were picking out a tank, my dad came up with the idea to make a 30 gal. sump/fuge. We have seen custom one's that are about 100 gal, but we don't know of any plans for a 30 gal. Anyone got any ideas?

Siren,

You can follow most plans for a sump/fuge and scale it to whatever space you will have available. You need to factor buffer room for main tank drainage in case of a power outtage, in sump filtration (protein skimmer, etc.) and then use the remaining area as a refugium. I like to have as much of a refugium as possible, but that's just me.

My setup has 2 acrylic boxes: One for the drain from the main tank and one for the return pump.
The boxes are around 4deep X 4high X (whatever width of sump).

This works great because the drainage box has a closed top that I am able to set my skimmer on and the rest is pure refugium. Add a light, live sand, live rock, macro, and some mangroves and your set!

Make sure you leave enough room for a DSB (3-4 inches) if you go with the refugium.

Sorry, I don't want to confuse you!

The boxes are sitting inside the sump. One at each end. the live sand is between them.

The only thing I would do different would be to add a large divider between the livesand and the return pump. This will keep the Macro from interfering with the return pump.
