Right now, I live in a
small house near the Utah Idaho border. It is only 384sf or about 12ftx32ft but I
have a 150 gallon in wall tank. We moved in to the home to save money and pay
off debt but it is time to move. We just don’t have any room left with two
girls my wife and I and our 2 100lb dogs. In February we bought a house closer
to town it is 8 times larger than our current home and we found a place that
can support a fish room! I like the size of my 150 gallon but I wanted to go
with a glass tank. I didn’t want to go down to a 4ft tank so I decided to go to
a 180 gallon aquarium. I have it ordered and we are getting the house ready for
the new tank. I love the way that an
in wall tank looks, I think that it is nice to have all of the equipment and
mess behind the wall. I also think that this is why my wife is ok with such a
large tank too. The fish room will be right off of the main living area. The room
is 8.5ftx12ft and it also serves as my wife’s laundry room ( I guess we will see
how that goes).  Before we started  removing a wall  fish tank hole  before the drywall goes up  Drywall up and the first layer on. |

I drew up a plan for the fish room. I would like to have the sump like two feet off of the ground and to the side of the tank. this will give me the most access to work on and clean the sump. I dont like bending over under the tank and trying to work with the skimmer. I also want to have a qt/ species tank. Let me know what you think/ if you have any suggestions. I took some pictures of the stand. I currently have it only partially built. I needed to get part of it done so that the contractor could come in and start the drywall. The front part of the stand is supported with 2x4s sistered next to the wall joists. I should have taken a close up picture but I didnt. I think that I will do a support in the middle. Maybe I will offset it to the side a little bit to allow more room under the stand. I also ran a dedicated line from the breaker panel for the tank. I made and equipment list for the tank. I think that I got everything. Equipment List: -180 gallon Standard Tank - (4) Kesil A160WE - (1) 48" 2 bulb T5 - SWC 180 Skimmer - Jecod CP-40 - Jebao RW60 - Apex Jr - Apex DOS for Auto water changes - BRS Dosers - Tunze Osmilator ATO - Mag 1200 return - 40g Breeder sump -BRS 5 stage RO, 2 media reactors I have 10 fish right now. I am looking to get more for the new tank. I think that I will add another firefish. It is funny that they are some of the cheapest fish but I get a ton of comments about them. I think that i might want a wrasse or some anthias. Livestock - Hippo Tang - Sailfin Tang - Lamark Angel - Yellow tang - Flame Angelfish - (2) Black Ice Snowflake Clowns - 1 firefish - chromis - banggai cardinal - lots red bubble tips (looking to thin them out a bit) What other fish do you guys like?

| I loved my diamond goby, lots of character. I had a similar tang trio as you and loved them. I definitely want to add some anthias this time around. And if you still have an abundance of rbtas in a month or so, I would be interested in buying one from you :) |

| I like the goby idea. I like the idea of something that will turn over the sand. I have also contemplated a Goby pistol shrimp pair but I feel like they might get lost in such a big tank. |

I got some time to work on the fish room last night. I made most of the stand for the qt and species tanks. They are 33 long and I think that they will be really cool. I will also be running a sink over to the work table. My wife says that if I have a fish room I need to have a fish sink too. It is a small bar sink but it should be perfect for cleaning out the skimmer cup. This weekend will be a big one for the tank. I got the tank, now I just need to drill it. Then it can go into the stand. I got the tank in last weekend. I had to drill 3 holes in the back of it which made me very nervous ( to the point that I did not sleep well the night before). I also got the species/qt stand painted and the sink in and hooked up to the plumbing. I also got the plumbing started for the overflow. The drains are all 1 1/4" they will go down to the stand level and connect into a 1 1/2" manifold. I added the braces last weekend under the tank. It was pretty minor stuff. It is perfect because the tank sits right above a room full of storage racks so it was easy to do. I did add a beam to support one joists because it will be holding one leg of the stand, the sump and the 70g water storage tank. With the braces done, I also finished the stand for the 40g breeder sump and the plumbing for the tank. It was time to add water to the tank. This is always the most stressful time for me. I never get a good nights sleep right after I fill up a tank. especially a large tank. the whole time it was filling up I would keep checking everything. "Is it still level", "how is the stand", "how is the silicone holding up". Everything went perfect. The stand was perfect. The tank was perfect. I got a light rack put together. I made it out of some aluminum c channel. I made it so that it can be moved up out of the way if I need it to. The kessils are not very big though, so I dont think that I will need to have them move very often. In order to make sure that there was never too hard of an impact while moving the lights, i also added some 2lb springs to the wall attachment. I filled up the tank with ro water and salt. It is very close to being ready for the fish. I hope the move will go ok. On a side note. Our previous house had a well with very hard water. The TDS of the water was like 16 after the RO membrane. We also had (after some disscusion with BRS) what appeared to be CO2 in the water. I would go through 1 can of DI resin in 60 gal or less of treated water. I am happy to report that my water at this new house has a TDS of 1-2 after the RO membrane and I have filled up almost 300 gallons of tanks and I have barely used any DI resin. So you have 1 to 2 tds going into your fish tank? How old are the filters? I've always had 0 coming out and when it starts reading1 or 2 then I look into getting new filters...maybe just me being paranoid, lol Looking good though, can't wait to see it with fish! |

| The tds between the ro and the di resin is 2. It is 0 coming out of the di resin. I was just saying that im glad that i no longer go through 15 bucks worth of resin to do 60 gallons of water. |

Is there a reason you didn't have your drain manifold run at the same height as the top of your sump instead of dropping below it and then going back up and over the top of the sump? Krazie - I took it down lower so that it would not show through the glass on the back of the tank. I am still not sure what I will do for a background. I didn't want to put the sump a lot lower though. I built the sump stand to allow for an additional 40g breeder to fit below. As far as self starting issues, I guess that I am not sure what you are talking about. When the power goes out the overflow box drains and water will just sit in in the drain until the return starts back up. There is no siphoning and it starts up just fine. My main concern is sediment buildup in the line. I will see how it goes. One nice thing is that I do get a lot of flow from the return. The total head height is only like 1.5ft-2ft so the flow rate substantially more than when the sump was under the tank.

Moved the fish tank this weekend. Life can be crazy. My little brother came to help and I am glad he did. We started about 1:00pm and had most things finished by 6:00. Things got a little crazy. I lost the Lamark Angel and a Chromis and my daughter decided to break her leg. It was rough to say the least. I think that everything has calmed down but I am really going to miss the angel. RIP. Let me use your picture to try and explain what I meant.  So in order for the bean animal to work correctly (and silently) it has to be able to run a restricted airless siphon on the herbie, upto a full flow on the Durso and not draw air into the line from the emergency. When the return shuts off the siphon breaks on both of the siphon drains and fills the pipe with air down to the level of the water in the sump and then holds water in the pipe drain pipe at that level. See my edit of your picture below. (Red is water level with the return off, yellow is air in the pipe and blue is water left in the pipe).  So then when the the return starts back up the drain has the potential to become whats called air locked due to the air in the lines being trapped between the water in the pipe and the water entering the drains. That air does not want to got down the pipe so this standing water in the pipe creates resistance to the siphons starting by them self until the drain either burps the air back up the drains or is able to break the air up into smaller bits and force it down the pipe and out the sump end. Most drain pipes in this drain setup will completely drain of water during the shutdown to prevent this airlock condition from happening. It sounds like somehow you have not experienced an airlock yet but I just saw that there was the potential for it to happen in this setup. A second question I have after thinking this through is in your setup where all three drains go into a single manifold do you experience any noise from air being sucked from your emergency drain into the manifold and then creating bubbles or gurgling at the sump? Because this drain setup is supposed to work based off of siphon it would seam that your emergency drain is a "hole in the side of the straw" and would be introducing air into what is supposed to be a "sealed" siphon. Sorry about all the questions. Just stuff that popped into my head as I looked at your pictures and read your write up. Thanks for answering and sorry to hear about your daughters leg. Krazie, I think that I am understanding the bean animal differently. The way I understand it is that the herbie is the full siphon that is restricted to just less than the amount of water that you want flow down the overflow. The Durso takes the remaining (small) amount of water that remains as well as variations in flow. To my understanding the durso never takes a full siphon because it has a hole in the top to prevent this. As far as the emergency overflow being like a hole in a straw I am not sure this will happen because the water level will always separate the different overflows because the water level never goes below the output drain into the sump. If I am still not understanding this right please point me to an article that you feel can explain it some more. Thanks. The more that I think about it though I am pretty sure that I want to run the emergency drain as a separate line. So to tell you all a little more about the move. I was able to get everything in one load. I only had a few corals and the anemones to worry about so that made moving the rock easy. The fish were easily caught and we headed to the new house. When we got to the house i put all of the fish in the 2 quarantine tanks. The clownfish and the smaller fish went in the upper and all of the others went in the lower. I quickly got the rock into the tank. I connected the apex, set up the protein skimmer and got the return pump going. Everything went fine until we had to go. After everything was said and done the aquarium was the last thing I was worried about. The tank was running, the fish were in the quarantine tanks everything would be ok until I came back the first thing in the morning. I was wrong I think that there was not enough oxygen in the water. When I showed up the next day the Lamark was long gone and the yellow tang was gasping on his side. I quickly threw all of the large fish into the main display except for the yellow tang. I did't want him dying under the rocks so I threw him in the sump. The hippo and sailfin we almost imediatly better and the yellow tang was getting better until he got too close to the return pump ( I think). I got the yellow tang back into the tank with the clowns and did an 80% water change. I think that the main culprit of the Lamarks death was the fact that circulation pump in the lower quarantine tank was not working right (that's why I think the oxygen was too low). Everything is fine now but it was hardly the best tank move I have ever done. Here is the tank right now. I had siphon on the brain while typing. I updated my post with the correct words to avoid confusion from readers. We are of the same understanding on the drain setup. Any chance you could do a youtube video looking down into the overflow box while the return pump comes back on? One of the drain outlet pipe in the sump while it's running would help as well. The reason that I believe your emergency drain may be allowing air into the drain is because while running the water level in the sump is just above the horizontal run of drain pipe. This means that the larger manifold pipe will attempt to be a siphon but because the durso and emergency drains allow air in the siphon in the manifold is broken at that point and just becomes gravity fed. You might be right about what is making this entire scenario work and that is the running level in the sump being slightly above the horizontal portion of the drain. The only actual siphon portion in your design is from the Herbie input at the overflow box to the T where that line hits the manifold. Anything past there is gravity flow unless all three drains are covered in water completely and siphoning as well. This last condition is what I believe is happening during the return startup which creates a full siphon on all three drains (maybe a slight air leak on the durso vent) but once that siphon starts it almost immediately drains the overflow, manifold, the durso and emergency drains and then draws air into the manifold and breaks the siphon for everything but the Herbie. Does that sound like what you see during start up? I'm just going through scenarios here as I have bad experiences with drains not working correctly so i probably over think them now. If you want to move on just say the word. I will make a video in the next few days Krazie. I knew that having the sump at a similar level to the tank was not typical when I started this build. I will show a couple of scenarios as well (pump start and stop, plugged overflow. I also got the auto water change system set up and I think that I will do a little video of that as well.

I might consider making them all separate ,, here is the article I read to get my understanding of the bean animal style overflow,, http://www.beananimal.com/projects/silent-and-fail-safe-aquarium-overflow-system.aspx , the primary is the One that is adjustable that is meant to be full siphon you adjust the flow through it with a valve.the second pipe is for extra waterleft over from the first in normal operation , in the case of an emergency if the first one gets clogged this second one turns full siphon once that hole is the top becomes submerged in water i.e. Loss of air ,to help carry the flow with the emergency drain, I think you might have a bit more piece of mind if you cut out that manifold and plumb each drain pipe individually that way if a fat snail gets sucked up one and makes it down to the horizontal section and passed the last tee and decides to get stuck on a mound of detritus he doesn't block off all three of your overflows completely Hope this helps ! It has been a little while but here is a quick update. I was able to get some aquascaping done. The style is similar to my last tank. I has one main island on one side of the tank and an open cave network on the other. The tank has looked better and I am struggling a little with the cyano. I am changing out 6 gallons a day to make sure that the water is as good as possible and to help some new fish in the quarantine.

The other day I just noticed that my main island on the right side of my tank looks like a man striking a pose. Well it has been just over a year since I started my tank and it has been way too long since I have done an update. I have been through a lot including bryopsis, and ich outbreak, and a blue tang that decided he was going to go rouge and eat all of my zoanthids. Here is a picture of my tank right now. There are probably 10 or more anemones in the bunch. Some people have asked me ho I get them to stay and the middle and to be honest I don't know. The anemones do so well in my tank that I think they are spawning because I will have little ones pop up randomly all over the place. To avoid having a tank full of anemones I remove any one that does not stay in the middle. Here are some pictures of the fish room. You will have to excuse my mess and and the poor lighting. When we moved in it was a craft/laundry room. It is now a fish/laundry room. It is about 8.5ftx12ft and so there is plenty of room for both my wife and I to get our work done. In fact, my wife and I have both done very well at not getting in each others way. I LOVE having a fish room that is this large it is so nice to have a place where all the noisy equipment and pumps can go. I love that I have my own place to test the water and a large contained to do all my saltwater mixing. I don't have to crawl under my stand to clean the skimmer. Everything is easy to work on and access. I am not done with it yet. I would really like to work seriously on cable organization and having a cleaner overall look but that will come.

| Thanks! I have always loved the in wall tanks. I can keep all of my mess behind the the door. All the sounds stay in the fish room and I get an amazing piece of living art where everyone can see it. |
