My 2 cents:

It's typical that online buyers have a general idea of what rock they may be getting but really have no choice regarding specific pieces. They may also get LR that doesn't even resemble the pictures.

If you're looking for specific pieces it really pays to watch this forum and ksl.com and then drive around to cherry pick the best pieces.

Remember also that a prime piece of life encrusted LR from a currently running tank can offer amazing benefits that are far above what can be had by buying a piece of barren LR from a LFS, no matter how shapely or porous that rock is.

The last time I bought LR sight unseen, the rock though touted as alive, ended up being quite dead in the water. It's still cycling in my tank systems and despite my efforts is still creating some stringy algae issues. Beware dead LR. Unhappy

Aloha,
Mark  Hug

BTW, I have awesome pieces of Utah Rock, both dry and very live, as well as other life encrusted LR I need to let go of. Dry Utah Rock is only $0.50/lb. My number is 808-345-1049. I'm in Murray, not Hawaii. Wink

Live Rock N Reef in Salt Lake has all sorts of live or dry rock. They have real reef rock, fabricated rock, fabricated rock that's then been put in the ocean to be made 'live', etc. And I think they're having a sale the next few days too. Here their website so you can see what kind of stuff they have, but it's fun to go down and pick through their stuff.

Do they bring in uncured LR? I love the stuff. I used to periodically place a piece or two in my system to let it recover and thrive in good quality water so that anything that could survive, would survive. I found all kinds and colors of Sponge, Algae and bugs that I had never seen before. All of that added to the diversity and stability of my system. Smile

I'm a little different than some hobbyists. I prefer the diversity of life on the rock over the shape of the rock. I then insert that lively LR into an interesting aquascape. Over the years I have also found interesting looking pieces of Utah Rock. For example, the pic below shows what I called my amphitheater piece. It looked like a large boulder on the ground but it moved when I kicked it. It was like a punch bowl sitting upside down on the ground.

I "give away" Utah Rock (and Utah Oolitic Sand) for $0.50/lb.

Aloha,
Mark  Hug

A year of growth on the amphitheater rock.
