I am about to put an Aqueon 120 on my stand. The stand is exactly 48" x 24". The Aqueon 120 is 48 1/2" x 24 1/2". Would it be structurally sound if I build a frame out of 2x4s on their sides that run the perimeter of the stand but overhang 1/4"? I thought this might be easier than getting a giant sheet of plywood and having to cut it to those dimensions. Plus, I wouldn't have to cut out holes in plywood for the overflow boxes. |

Sounds like your're saying the stand is a flat top with no raised molding on front and sides, right? That's only 1/4" of the plastic frame extending on every side. In my experience with similar situations, no additional support is needed. If it looks weird to have the frame extending out 1/4", adding molding on front and sides will hide it and look good too. How is the stand built? If its particle board and your overhanging the weight you will not like the results. If its 2x4 framed straight and plumb you are ok. There are a lot of questions to having a stand that is built small. All stand manufactures build with that 1/2" extra, its a industry standard. The stand is built with 2x4s. The weight would be distributed over 16 vertical 2x4s. No partical board here ;) I am going to put the tank on a piece of 3/4" plywood sheet, which will be sitting on the frame of the stand. I didn't want to cut overflow holes in the sheet of plywood, but will end up going with that option. Thanks for all who contributed. |
