A generator is great if you're home when the power goes out. Our first purchase was a battery operated air pump. It plugged into the wall and when the power went out, the battery kicked in. From there we purchased a Coleman 1600W generator (and have never needed to use it for the aquarium). Once we acquired our Vortech's, we purchased battery backups soon afterwards. We then bought a second generator (4000W). About the only step up now would be a whole house generator. ------------- A government strong enough to give you everything you want, is powerful enough to take everything you have. |

Solar is not a bad option. You can tie it to the grid to offset your electric bill (it will pay itself off in 10 years). But then if the power goes out it will be a reserve power supply. When the power goes out... paint stirrer and a cordless drill. Just shake up the tank for a good 3 minutes, and do it every hour. Also, a big spatula and some stirring by hand is a great idea. I guess to me there are two types of power outages. Oh dang the power is out, let's stir the tank now and then for a couple hours. And then oh dang the power has been out now for 8 hours, what should we do. Adam ------------- Come to a meeting, they�re fun! |

Great replies everybody thanks haven't got the funds to invest in a generator. But the cordless drill mixing the tank up is a great idea. I guess I could just pack the the tank up move it to your house for the night and watch some T.V. haha Your houses will have all the lights on. People will be like how do you have all this power? And are you popping popcorn? Is that finding nemo playing?!! hahaha |

Lol !!! you can also cover with a blanket to hold heat in or an inverter from a battery jumper to run a power head for a limited time if your going to be off for awhile. Just a short term solution . Then finding nemo at a friends with power works

| I have a Computer UPS which provides around 2 hours of backup power to my pumps and heaters and LED Light. If the power goes out I almost always see it restored in less than 2 hours. The only trick to using a UPS is you need to buy a plug in GFI that plugs into the UPS and then everything plugs into the GFI plugs. That way your protected. Without that if your GFI in your wall trips the UPS will still provide power which could be a very bad thing. |

| I bought my inverter from a pawn shop , im always looking for tools in pawn shops and bought my 500w inverter with a broken plug for $5 !!!! took a risk and it worked just lucky if it had not worked was only $5 |

I prefer to set up the tank in a way that it can survive a power outage without any intervention from the hobbyist.
