My wife and I currently have a 90 gallon tank (48x18x24) and are considering adding a large cube and building a fish room. Here is a picture of the existing tank!

I'm thinking a 48x36x24 or 48x48x24 for the size. Any suggestions on finding a tank or having one built locally?

Ok.... was away for the weekend but back home now. Here is what I'm looking at doing.

This room use to be my office; but I lost it to my wife's Gym setup and I got regulated to a  sitting room upstairs. She has now got too much equipment for this room so I "might" get it back.

If I do I can put a great size tank here:

And she will move her equipment to the main family room where we currently have our existing tank along with a couch and table...

There is a great size closet behind the wall in the office that I could turn into a fish room. Its about 8x10 in size and there is plumbing and a drain going into the floor that I could access as well.

Originally I was thinking of a 4x3x24 or 4x4x24 cube but I'm now thinking that the wall it would go on is 6'6" wide so maybe a 5x3x27" or 5x3x30" tank would be better. The sump, Ref, etc. can site in the closet/fishroom.

Thoughts???

We are underway! We moved 2/3 of the exercise equipment out of the new "fish" room into the family room and we picked out new flooring to replace the carpet. We have a Cabinet to move from the family room that will require some fixes to the tiles in that area. Hopefully that will happen next week. I have Eric (fire shrimp) coming over tonight to talk tanks! I'm now thinking going with a 5x3x27" or 6x3x27". I really want a "cube" like tank but one as large as I can get down the stairs and into the room!

Starting to think equipment. Ideas are welcome!

Things are moving along a bit. The tank is on order and Eric has the glass on the way! I've been cleaning up the closet that will become the fish room. Also tore out a cabinet in the family room that had to go to make room for the wife's gym equipment that is moving out of the way for the new Library/Study/Fish room. The hardwood that will replace the carpet is on order and will be installed in a week or two.

Right now I'm planning out a few things:

* I'm going to go with 4- Ecotech Radian LEDs to light this baby up!
*2 Vortech MP40's from my 90 Gallon and 2- MP10's that will be new. I'm planning on selling the 90-gallon tank when the move is completed
* Reeflo Hammerhead pump for the return
* Neptune Apex control just because I can't resist having control of my system from an iPad or iPhone!

I'm thinking of having Elite-Aquatics build the sump as I think their custom sumps look darn good! I want my fish room to be very clean, organized, and just as much a show-room as the main Library/Study/Fish room will be. I'll also put in a Frag tank as well as a quarantine tank into the fish room. Hope to pick up those from someone selling used on this site! I also need to find a builder for the stand; someone who can do a good job matching up the style of the existing bookshelves in the library.

Give me suggestions!!

Ok; to catch everyone up... great progress is being made!

1st; the demo in the fish room/equipment room has been completed. I ripped out most of the existing closet style organizers out of the room; carpet is gone, and the wiring has begun!

The 1st of the equipment has began to arrive! Here is the return pump I'll be using; its a Reeflo Hammerhead Gold!

FireShrimp (Eric D.) has got the glass and the tank construction is moving fast! I think he's excited to build the even bigger tank that is after mine!!

Finally.... the new Hardwood floor for the LIbrary/Fishroom is 95% done! The glue is setting over the weekend and the trim will be finished on Monday.

To add a couple more pieces of the plan!

As I mention above, the tank is being custom built by Eric at Aquarium Creations!

The sump; a frag tank; and the skimmer I will be using are being custom build by Tyler at Elite Aquatics!! I can't wait to see them!

And the stand/build in bookcase is being built by Dion Richins!

I purchased the 50 Gallon CAD lighting Artisan tank that SnowSfsr was selling as a QT. I also purchased his lighting and sump (also from Tyler) as well!

I guess you can say I'm keeping it within the club!!

I'm all about "going big". However, that Hammerhead is a lot of pump. I would venture to say- too much pump. What are your plumbing schematics? We started with the same sized pump and soon downgraded to the Barracuda, which still had to be throttled back.

Yea, those reeflo pumps do work, they just move SO much water. If you wanted to stay with a huge pump like that you could do 2 overflows or maybe even more.

Josh, I'm curious at to what makes you assume he'll be alright?

Troyholl, I hope you don't mind the discussion-
Early estimates lead me to believe your DT and total volume will be very close to ours. We have dual 1" drains which bump to a 2" return on the way back to the sump (approximately 16' away). I also feed a 75G isolation tank through the return and have a manifold set up for a UV sterilizer and a mongrove grow out. With all that, I've still had to throttle the pump to about half capacity to allow the DT drains to keep up. Maybe I missed the details, how far away will your "fish room" sit and is it on the same floor or a different level?

I'm worried to and might go to a smaller pump. The room is just behind the tank so its not got to push very far.

What pump do you have?

We are running the Reeflo Barracuda. I would have probably gone with an even smaller pump. However, that would have meant redoing our plumbing. The Hammerhead and Barracuda share the same footprint and fitting size. Anything else would have required modification. Not something I wanted to mess with.

It's not a big deal if it is.  Just call Reeflo and buy a Barracuda or a Goby impeller and swap it out.  They're about $30.

*edit*I'm assuming they interchange like the rest of the Reeflo Pump lines, but I'm not 100% certain that particular line can swap impellers.

To the best of my knowledge, the "hybrid" just includes the extra impeller with the package.

When I was shopping,  Reeflo themselves told me the normal Hammerhead, Goby, Barracuda all interchange.  I ended up with the high head line since I pump from my basement and and they all interchange. Tarpon, Wahoo, Marlin...

Using a smaller impeller will use less electricity than throttling back the flow on the outlet with a ball/gate valve.

Whatever that's worth to you.

I had my Hammer head throtteled down about 40%. It was pumping 25 line ft from the basement with all 4 holes in a 180 all glass being utilized as returns.

Here is the begining of Troys Stand. Frame has been fabricated and the build up is being done now.

Sounds like I may have to throttle back even more as I'll only be pushing a few feet not 25' with 4 returns as well.

Unfortunately the conclusion will take a while! One my work is crazy busy, and two... I'm headed on a business trip next week and a vacation in early APril to Hawaii!

We are working towards the delivery of the stand and tank next Friday though and Tyler should also have the sump and frag tank done. The skimmer may take a little bit longer. I also am going to try and put down tile in the equipment room... maybe as early as this weekend. No plumbing will happen until mid APril though... Disapprove

More progress! I also made the decision to put down tile in the equipment room with about 8" trim around the walls to help contain any spillage and to keep the walls from getting wet. We will pick out tile this weekend and get the tile put down during the week next week with the goal of having it in place before the tank, stand, and sump arrive. Its in the equipment room so it won't be in the way of the tank move but regardless I'd like to have it done. After that will be stands for that room that I'll build after our vacation in April....

Hopefully I have posted this in time and save you some headaches and money.

How thick is that glass? If it is 1/2" or thicker, MP10s won't work. They hold on glass 3/8" or thinner. People have tried 1/2" but the pumps don't last that long.

4 Radions won't cover that size tank. You will need 6 total. 2 rows of 3 to cover the 37" front to back and get enough PAR with the 24" depth.

Thanks! I wasn't aware on the mo10 limitation. I've seen pics of them on larger tanks so that is a surprise. I had not purchased them yet so no big deal.

Yes, I know I'll need more Radians. Either 5 or 6 is my plan. Not sure if I could make 5 work or not.

For me, I would look at the tank as 2 separate portions. You are lighting 2 areas of 36x37 instead of 1 area that is 72x37.

You will want 3 Radions over each 36x37 area. 2 might work but I think you would be limited on corals and placement.

If you aren't dead set on the Radions, there are other options that may work well for you.

Ecoxotic, Pacific Sun and Reeftech are all good companies to look into as well. I am not a huge Pacific Sun fan but that is because of their old distributor and a VERY long story. Their products seem top notch though.

I personally use Ecoxotic stuff and have been happy with it. This is all MY opinion though. I am sure you have done extensive research on the topic.

So the question becomes, do I now go with 4 MP40's... or maybe just add an MP60 to go with the two MP40s...

Here is your sump minus the blue eurobrace (yet to be installed). Nevermind the extra acrylic around the edges, it gets flush cut after its finished.

Looking good! I'm VERY excited to see the BLUE eurobracing as well! I really like the one you did with Red, and I think blue will be even more cool!

I made a bit of progress today. Seems like I worked harder than the results show, but at least its moving in the right direction. I wired in a fan today along with a dehumidifier switch. In addition I have about 75% of the room wiring completed. I'm running two dedicated 20amp circuits into the room. The hard part in both the wiring and the fan is the fact my basement is finished and I have to tell you; for the inexperienced electrician that I am... pulling wiring through my basement was a #$%@#^ difficult job! I'm close though... would have been done but its 9:30pm and I ran short on wire and I really don't want to visit home depot again today!

Wiring done! At least all the wiring runs and boxes anyway! I also got the 1st coat of patching done on the walls from where the closet shelving was before, and where I had to cut holes into the walls to pull wiring through. Finally I have all the plumbing supplies for the sink and drains. I've got to run water lines to the sink area next.

I'm off on a business trip for 3-days. The next big event will be the tank and stand install on Friday am!

I actually had more than one GIANT event going on today. In addition to the huge tank install, I had a platform being installed at work that required a HUGE 350 ton crane to lift onto the roof. I run the IT department at work, and we are putting in new air conditioners over the data center.. I don't have the pic of the lift itself but here is one of the crane and another of the platform installed...

So I ran from my "Home" install to my "work" install in the afternoon.

Now imagine for a second.... if this crane had been necessary to lift my even larger fish tank into the house!! Now that would be a tank!

I don't post on here very often, but I though this build is excellent!!! It is nice to know that there are local people that are so capable to help build such an awesome system. I will have to remember that in the future when the time comes for my next upgrade! I will continue to follow this build! Can't wait to see it full and stocked!

I don't want to hijack Troy's build, but Eric...do you offer a warranty on your tanks?

Posted By: Aquarium Creations
Date Posted: March 30 2012 at 8:22pm
Yes, Just like any Aquarium Manufacturer We warranty the craftsmanship and of course leaks For 3 years provided this is on a quality stand. Just like any Aquarium Manufacturer we don't cover damages caused from the aquarium we fix/replacement of the aquarium. I stand behind my quality and craftsmanship, I am local so you wouldn't have to ship it back like other company's.

WOW! I can almost see myself working from these pics right down in the building under one of those radome platforms :) I was wondering what that crane was there for. I thought maybe they had to lift a large system up on the roof.
Fantastic tank By the way

Lurkerz,

Yep... the crane was there to lift the platform in the picture along with all the A/C units. We are doing a major renovation to the Data Center...
