Thought I'd post some pics of my journey out of boredom....camera sucks though...hopefully Santa will pull through this year.

First tank- 55 gallon, typical petco tank with the fake deco, stocked with the typical freshwater community fish

6 months into the hobby, started my first planted tank, 10 gallon, which I used to raise a couple of young, but infamous ELECTRIC blue jack dempseys...

Re-did 55 gallon fw tank (added sand, rock for more natural look) and wanted to take on peacock cichlids...

One of my favs.

Got Bored and started my first salt water tank....didn't know what I was doing though...

55 gallon HOB SW tank

Learned quite a bit on forums: Upgraded to 90 gallon and decided I would make some improvements with a sump and better equipment.

Tank turned 1 years old, had some great growth, kept learning.

I have now learned too much (hence another change coming) and also have limited time while working on my PhD, so I have decided to downgrade to a smaller tank and make some other changes that will simplify my life and make the tank less work.....pics to come!

About the tank and Under the Hood:

Tank: 4 foot shallow(33 gallons)
-SPS Dominant, Shallow Sand Bed, All Vida Rock
Sump: Oceanic (~25 gallons)
Light: ATI Sunpower 6X39 watt
Flow: Mag 3 Return, 1 Mp40
Dosing: 2 Part Bulk Reef Supply (pumps & cal/alk), 10 gallon Auto top off reservoir
Skimmer: ASM Gx1
Fuge Light: 5600k PAR30 screw in LED from Lowes (grows chaeto great!)
-Loaded with Chaeto and some established Utah Rock
Controller: Reefkeeper lite
Reactor: Two Little Fishies phosban reactor, Carbon use only at this time.

Last but not least....custom installed paper towel roller Wink ....paper towels are a reefers best friend.

And thanks to the pull out mini doors, my 3 year old hasn't found my controller...yet!

The tank has been running about a month and I've really enjoyed it.  It is quite efficient and requires little maintenance on my part (compared to my old tank).  This should allow me to worry less since my time is short (Full-Time Job & PhD student).  I'll try to take some more pictures soon and update periodically with some growth shots!

I like the paper towels rack. Blue shop towels and Sprayaway ammonia-free glass cleaner are a fantastic glass cleaning solution.

I got rid of several colonies from my old tank, but that made room in the new tank for several new frags.....this is a strawberry shortcake I picked up not too long ago that is starting to color up.

VERY NICE.  You have a super nice set up.  I am hoping that I end up with something a bit like it.  My first tank was 29 gallons with about 29 lbs of ROCK!  hehehe... it was fun and things grew but my new tank which is 57 gallons has only the rock from the first effort.  I cannot wait for things to really grow out, my hope is to get where you are... a beautiful tank dominated by living things not tons of rock!  VERY VERY NICE.  Congrats!

thanks for the nice comments guys....I am very happy with this setup, however, I can't wait for it to get overgrown...especially for all my new frags in front to grow into mini colonies.

Just an update with a couple more pics, and some new frags I picked up that have acclimated well.

My light acclimation period is finally over!  Started out at 20+ inches and lowered 2 inches per week, now it is at final height, 4 inches above the tank.  I have been able to watch my corals react to the increase in light and coloration is improving.

These two pics of my strawberry are about two weeks apart....coloration improving and some encrusting going on over the last two weeks, due to the slow increase in light intensity.

The more light that I pound at my pink birdsnest, the more pink it becomes!

Here are a few new additions!

Quick full tank shot-  Kinda blurry though.....hopefully I'll get some good growth over the next few months and improvement in coloration....

My Evolution Continues....Eric @ Aquarium Creations just finished up my new rimless, the tank is awesome and would definitely recommend him to anyone needing a tank... will be updating this thread with pics soon of the new setup in the coming days...in the mean time, here is some strawberry shortcake desert...

Roughly 10-12 months for the both of them....they are very fast growers in general, but I had some pretty good success with them!

That's a sweet tank, why did you go without the sand if I might ask. Also where did you get those fans? that's exactly what I need.

Fans are awesome....they only kick on when my tank hits 79.....nice amount of air flow and not too loud.

You can find them here:

There are a few reasons I ditched the sand...

1.  I can really control how clean the tank is
2.  I wanted to be able to have a lot of flow throughout the tank, thus no sand storms
3.  I wanted to go skimmerless and felt removing the sand bed would allow me to do this successfully, as a barebottom tank is very easy to siphon out detrius.

Hi All, not sure this forum gets much traffic anymore, but thought I’d post and let folks know I am starting a new build…the evolution continues, haha.

I’ve been out of the hobby a few years for a move and house remodel, but life has finally settled some.  I am documenting this latest build on YouTube.  Check it out, just one video at this point, but more to come as I go. Trying to remember how to do this stuff or learn what has changed, lol. Hope you all are doing well!
