i just came into the possesion of a very large acrylic aquarium (they guy said 150gal when filled completely) but it has these 2 or 3 small (maybe 2inch diamater) holes in the bottem of the tank! Can someone link me to a site that can explain this bottem fed method of filtering to me? id need to know what kinda equiptment is required to get this thing operational. any help is appreciated.

I'd want to really check it out and plan well. Sometimes I'd recommend capping off those holes, and sometimes I'd use them.

im going for a freshwater tank because i also have some turtles i would like to work into my community. im slowely learning more and more about all this. wow i have a long way to go, aparently this tank has something called a skimmer box built into one of the walls. could someone give me the Pro/con for a skimmer box vs canister systems?

I agree, you should post some pics, and it wouldn't be a bad idea to have someone come check it out and offer suggestions.
From what I understand, you have a tank that was built for a saltwater setup, but like has been said, you can use it for freshwater just as easily. The basic idea with this type of setup is that water in the main tank drains down into a "sump" tank below the main display. There it goes through whatever filtration you have, and then gets pumped back up to the main display. This method isn't used as often in freshwater setups as it is in marine systems, but there is no reason why it won't work well. One of the benefits to this setup over something like a canister filter is that the water level in the main tank stays constant - the sump level is what fluctuates with evaporation. That "skimmer box" you mentioned is also called an overflow, and that's what keeps the water level constant because the water has to reach that level before it can spill over into the drain inside the overflow. Chances are the holes you mentioned are inside that overflow box, and they're used for the drain and return lines. If the holes are outside the overflow, they're most likely for a separate "closed loop" circulation system.
