If I want to replace a cracked brace 55 with a clear acrylic brace ... will weldon 16 work ok ? TIA! |

I wanted to do the same thing on my 125 gal and didn't completely trust the weld-on bonding the acrylic to the nylon/ABS/PVC(?) of the top brace. So I glued (weld-on 16) and screwed (#8 nylon machine screws/nuts).

Hey ... I used weldon16 to glue the brace in.... but it didnt hold? Any ideas why? I didnt use the nylon screws, because i didnt want them sticking up. would it be a big deal if the center brace was not replaced on a 55g? would it bow at all? |

I had one that broke when full, and it bowed a lot. Ended up
chucking the tank because I didn't trust it. Wish I would have

Vidar just PM'd and called me. The brace popped off one side, so I told him to use screws if he feels that it should be braced, otherwise let it be. It's bowing about a 1/2 inch in the middle (difference from the end), is that ok? IMO, no it's not ok. I would try to brace it. I used nylon screws and nuts to secure it. Ok, so should I drain most of the water tonight and brace it later
before adding the water again? The tank is still good is it not?

Mine was on a 55, and it bowed about 1/2 inch. I ran it for
awhile, but it just seemed like too big of a risk. If I would
have had a solid fix (screws) I would have kept the tank, but a new 55
is not tons of money (compared to all the water damage 55g's can do,
not to mention loss of livestock). I would find a good solid fix

When I replaced my center brace I wanted to be sure the weldon 16 would hold before I removed it. I took a scrap piece of acrylic and one of the lights the tank came with and glued them together. 24 hours later I tryed to pull them apart and ended up pulling the light apart. The light did not break where it was bonded but about an inch away where the plastic was thinner. This just proved to me that the acrylic and the bond was as strong or stronger then the plastic used to brace the tank in the first place. When I bonded mine I could see the two plastics melt into each other. I also twisted the two pieces together to make the plastics bond even better. And I decided to use 2 braces just to be on the safe side. So far the tank has been filled and running without any mechanical problems for over 6 months. In this hobby the tank is one of the cheapest parts especially when dealing with 55 gal and under. If I had to do it all over again I would buy a predrilled tank and not even worry about the brace or overflow at all.

I replaced the center brace on my all ready filled 46 Gallon bowfront
using the new silcone/Epoxy called "AMAZING GOOP" from Home depot. I put in 2 Stainless self tappers on each side. Worked great for me! |

Thanks Everyone ... I looked at it and it didnt even look like the weldon worked. Arrrg! I decided that my brothers turtle needed a new home more than I needed to mess with the brace more. LOL! |

Indeed I am, Corey did more then he needed concerning this, and I am hoping one day I get to return the favor. For those of you who didn't follow it all that well, this was an old tank corey had, from what I understand it was his first tank. He sold me the tank and stand for $100 which is good price, he also offered to put in a new brace which he did do, and then unfortunatly when we filled it up the brace broke. Corey was very responsive and just bought us a new tank. I can't say enough nice things about this group. Everyone I have met has done more then needed for us (probably why we have two tanks now heh), Mark has supplied all of the rock and sand for the 55gallon. Why wouldnt we stay with this group when you have people like this?!?!!?!
