Any type of substrate is good for bio filtration. It just will not work as a buffer.

These days, now that we are all familiar with Alk and Ca and how to keep them in line, the use of aragonite substrate is less important. Ordinary silica sand, though not ideal, works okay.

I have a Hawaiian black sand tank but the bottom 1/2" is Utah Oolitic so it gets the natural Alk and Ca (buffering) from that.

So would it be a good idea to put natural sand over the black sand to get the buffering capability?
