So im only a few weeks out on my 125, and im thinking a bit ahead of time. I really want  either a pair or trio of wrasse. i really like the flame wrasse and laboute wrasse, but im not willing to shell out that much yet. Ive narrowed it down to either the mccoskers, filament wrasse, velvet fairy, or carpenters. Im not sure which ones do better in pairs, or if they do at all. Which ones do you guys like best, and which would do best in a 125?
Carpenters
Filament
McCoskers
Velvet Fairy

Your assumption is absolutely correct.   If there is even a half inch hole, they will find it and go through it.

Most fairy and flashers do fine in pairs and trios.  But you will want to get all females, or one male and 2 females.  2 males of the same species will fight most of the time, and if you get all females, the dominant female will turn male.
You should try to make it down to my house sometime if you are really interested in wrasses.
They are my obsession.Big smile
I have a pair of Labout's, 4 flashers, and a flame, among many others.

Thanks Jeff. Last time I checked my nitrates were around 25-30.  Not too bad considering all the food I throw in there.Smile
My fish list is approaching 40. I just bought a juvenile blueline angel 2 weeks ago.

They do ok, nothing to brag about.  But that's ok with me also.
Since I usually dont frag, they can grow at a slow pace and I'm fine with that.  I don't use any coral food either, just good ole fish poop.Big smile

That's what its there for.   My wife wasn't to keen on the idea of the world looking in, but then I told her nobody ever looks at it.  I usually just turn it off if I have to reach down in the bottom of the tank.  Nobody wants to see an old fat man scaring a bunch of fish.Shocked

They are almost identicle to me.  3 of mine are Mckoskers, at least they were sold to me as Mckoskers, but I can't tell.  I'm alot more familiar with fairy wrasses.  But since I also got the 1/4 inch mesh, it is safe to have flashers.  I haven't lost one to jumping.

Would one type be better to add before the other? maybe less agressive to newcomers when i add more down the road? im kinda leaning toward the McCoskers...

If you cant find a couple at the same time, then I would add the smallest ones first. That way as you add larger ones they will be less likely to get picked on.  An acclimation box is excellent to have for introduction also.

gotcha. I might just have to hit up the acrylic master(tcfab) to see if he could make me an acclimation box like that. does the top piece of acrylic just slide out to release them? Also, do your bigger wrasse show any aggression towards a new and smaller wrasse while its in the box?

I'm guessing the box is so that they can get use to your tank without being picked on by others is that right? I have a box similar to that I may have to try when I get my wrasses.
Beautiful fish by the way!
How many wrasses do you have in one tank? I want to try and get all mine at the same time to help with aggression.

Tcfab would be an excellent choice to build one. The guy that built mine quit doing it and I've had to turn away plenty of people everytime I show mine.
The lid is held in place by a tiny magnet that he placed in the lid and top of the box.
In regards to my larger wrasses, they usually are curiouse of the newbies, but aren't aggressive.  Fairy wrasses are very timid at first and if you dont socially acclimate them when you introduce them, they will find a place in the rocks to hide and wont come out for a week.

Exactly, I have around 20-25 different wrasses in my 225g reeftank.
Be careful on how many you introduce at once, you have to make sure your bioload can handle it. If you have an acclimation box, it's no big deal.
