MSM sells used bags for less. The "micron" size changes with use. It doesn't really matter until it's been washed so many times that you can see through it.Smile
Yes, the stuff a filter sock removes is food for coral and other invertebrates, so using it half time will clear the tank of some detritus but not take too much food away from the tank. You could use it for a week on and a week off. Cleaning is best done in the washing machine with bleach but no soap.

Definitely do not place AC(activated carbon) in the filter sock. It can get pulverized there. It needs to go in a bag next to the return pump intake. The bag to use for that is as simple as bridal veil material, also called Tulle that can be picked up for pennies at the fabric store. Tulle is the same material fish nets are made from except you probably won't find dark green Tulle at the fabric store. LOL Be sure to buy the mesh size which will contain the AC granules or pellets. Place a small pile of AC in the middle, gather it together and secure the gather with a rubber band. Rinse out the carbon dust in tap water and set it in place in the sump. I often drape it over the return pump inlet strainer.
Hope this helps.
