I just put a damsel in my tank that I set up about 3 weeks ago and it died after about a week. just before it died I noticed that it had white stuff on its lips, I am just wondering how long I should wait before I buy another fish.

Check your tank parameters and if they look good then get another fish. New fish are prone to die... it happens.

Not to be mean but I would wait until it is fully cycled.  Sure damsels are pretty tough but if you started from scratch it could be a little while before your swings stop.

Yes, a pic of the tank would help us help you.
Can give a brief description of how you set up the tank. Mostly we are interested in the filtration. This means we will probably tell you things you did that you shouldn't have and things you didn't do that you should have. We all went through it ourselves. It's how we learned too.Smile

Curious on your parameters of your water.

All of my parameters are in the safe area. I have a skimmer rated for 250 gal, my filter is just a canister filter rated for 100 and I have a bubble wand and my heater is rated for 75 gal( I have a 55 gal). I just need to know how long I should wait for whatever disease my dead fish had to go away

Thanks for that info, but you said little about filtration and the items that would help us answer your main question. As was already mentioned, it can take some time for a new tank to stabilize, but there are ways to keep things alive from the start. Let me be more specific and explain filtration. More than 85% of the filtration is in the sand, rock, algae and water. Please describe those parts of your aquarium. Again, a picture is worth a thousand words. If you can't post it, send it to me and I'll post it. Smile  mailto:[email protected] - [email protected]

Diseases on fish don't really leave the tank unless you use a UV or something similar that basically sterilizes the water. However, if the fish is healthy then it shouldn't be a problem. Feeding garlic soaked foods to new fish is a big help as well!

p.s. Why in the world is Mark's location changed to Murray!? Moving back?
