If you saw my 180 gallon sump design, I have done a similar design for a 55 gallon tank. The design allows for two inlets using a side inlet so you can cover the top to keep evaporation to a minimum. It will support two filter socks, one from two different overflows. The water then meets in the center where the biomedia/refugium is kept and an external pump can return the water to the tank.

If you ask me I'd say it's over engineered; too complicated.

I think this Is a very easy and practical design. Cost is low. I have seen people put more effort into a tote that fails then this. What would you recommend , a bare tank without mechanical filtration, open top with submursable pump, maybe a tie on sock?

Looks good!

btw - this hobby is supposed to be fun!  That means that you "do" what makes it fun for you.  I have "designed" hundreds and hundreds of sump and tank setups on plain old yellow-lined paper - for fun.

Best advice I've seen in weeks!

I like to geek out and brainstorm ideas for sumps and returns and even fantasy whole basement aquariums.  You wouldn't believe some of the things we talk about on the way to Boise or after meetings at dinner!

I like the design, but I think I would forego one of the inlets and move the return pump to one end of the sump or the other.  (that is what I did with my 55 gal sump)

Amen to that.  I don't think you can over engineer anything in any hobby, it is what makes it fun, making something work as great as you can and enjoying the outcome.
