I've seen a few people put in a t before the gate and a few after... what is the correct way to do it or is there a difference? what is the reason for the T is it just to reduce bubbles??

 what way do you guys have them set up if you have the gate mod?

From what I have read...I think after is the correct way...otherwise, as you see in the second photo, you would have to have a long standpipe to handle the back pressure from the valve. The reason to have it at all is to reduce bubbles, yes. I still have not done this mod to mine, but my skimmer is working pretty well so I don't want to mess with it.

| Marine Solutions had the whole kit to perform the mod plus they have pics of where it goes. I think it also lets you set the water height in the skimmer. If the water level is consistent, the skimmer performs better. |

| I have mine set up like the second picture. For me I had limited space and this way took up the least amount. I have a printed out thing from ASM about it they say on the G1's you can put it eather way but on the G2-G4 use the T first before the gate valve. Dont ask me why that is just what they said. |

I have mine setup like in the second picture, but I dont have a stand pipe on the tee like that one does.

So thats what a gate valve looks like. So let me digress, it's function is to accurately regulate the backpresure of the skimmer, adjusting the "head", and getting a better skim? But what about the micro bubbles that are suppose to dissipated while they fall through the foam on stock skimmers? Sculpin

I dont remember the foam on mine doing anything in the first place. Since having the gate valve, I dont have a micro-bubble problem that I know about.

if your ASM skimmer seems to be working fine, why add this. I understand if you have problems adjusting the riser pipe and getting good skimmate, but otherwise...?
And, my skimmate looks way darker than either of those top two pics. I get about 3/8" of it a day and its real dark.

many put the gate mod on because when it comes to cleaning time, the ASM can be a major pain to get re-adjusted. The gate mod helps reduce this

That is why some need a stand pipe if they put the T before the valve. The back pressure of water has to go somewhere otherwise it would just spill out of the top of the T and have no effect. Logic for me says that the gate valve should regulate the pressure directly (before the T) rather than as a function of water pressure in the stand pipe.
I can see this, when I cleaned mine for the first time, it went bezerk when I put it back and I erroneously started setting it to a different position (the sliding output pipe) to try and fix it. In the end, it ended up in the exact place it was before...you just had to be patient. |

hmmm, people are moding there ASM skimmers with gate valves? I thought the beauty of the ASM/Euroreef design was the simplicity of the drain system. Just set the elbow at the level you want to keep in the skimmer and forget about it. I was always going to mod my skimmers (with gate valves) to this design but never got around to it.

Well the only reason I want to gate mod mine is that with the stock tube maxed out right before it becomes unstable... my bubbles only where making it to the bottom of my collection cup.... and if i could get those up to near the top of the collection cup I know I would have to be cleaning out the cup every other day and the skimate woulden't be as dark but I'm thinking it would pull out more and keep the water a bit cleaner than just running it like it has been ------------- http://www.reefinsanity.com" rel="nofollow - www.ReefInsanity.com http://www.facebook.com/ReefInsanity" rel="nofollow - www.Facebook.com/ReefInsanity 801-680-4676 |
