If I wanted to plan a trip to go snorkeling to see some great Reef life, what's the nearest/cheapest hotspot?

I'm not sure what exactly you are looking for, but Bonneville Seabase is a great place to start.  It is local and inexpensive.
Check it out.  http://www.seabase.net/ - http://www.seabase.net/

Roatan or Utila - islands off the coast of Honduras - you can really go budget if you want to.

Tulum on the Yucatan - rent a house in a private bay with kayaks to get you out to the reef

You just need to look on their site or give them a call for the current conditions.
Last year it wasn't very good visability, but this year should be better.

I have been scuba diving out at Seabase off and on for almost 8 years now and it is never good visibility even worse if there is a class out there getting certified.  Don't get me wrong I actually really enjoy diving out there but I wouldn't consider it a dive destination by any means.

I second this. Cozumel is IMO the best diving/snorkeling on a budget. I was there about a year and a half ago with my wife. I think we spent around $1200 for hotel, flights, and 3 days of boat dives (stayed for 5 days).

I also did my open water dives at Seabase, and the visibility was about 3ft.

People never really realize how cheap it is to go to Honduras and dive. It is a much better overall experience if you like to get away from the zoo in Cozumel. I have seen the two most incredible Queen Angels while free-diving/snorkeling in 20-30 feet of crystal clear water just off shore in Utila.

Here is an example...look what you get for your money.

I had totally forgotten about Roatan.

I was there, for two weeks in 1999 Shocked, for some volunteer work so I didn't get to see much of the sites till the last day.  The water is SO clear.  Just make sure to wear a LOT of sunscreen.  I got the worse sunburn I've every had while I was snorking.  And make sure to put it on every bit of skin showing or you will learn the hard way that you can get a sunburn anywhere.  Embarrassed

I should go back, I still have some money from there.  LOL

I actually had a lot of fun snorkeling last summer off of Key West, wasn't the best place in the world I've ever been, but at the same time, it's fun and not too expensive to go there...

Lately I've been really tempted to put my mask on and just stick my face in my tank just for the fun of it... Anyone ever done this before?
