I just made this out of stuff I had lying around. Slotted PVC pipe, Lee Tank Divider, and some egg crate!
I upgraded the next day to this:
And then this light crazy setup...2 days worth of growth

Watch your levels and let me know how that works out. I fear with the open air it'll be kind of like a wet/dry and boost your nitrate levels.
Looks like a real simple way to do the scrubber. I like.

Nope. My other tank gets a bit of it on the HOB filter return. Maybe next time it builds up I will scrape it off and seed it.

Looks good. It will do exactly what you are looking for. I have run a few different scrubbers in the past with incredible results. If you can seed it you will speed up the process, but it will do it on its own. Just give it some time, and don't ever clean it too well.
How is the noise level?

It took me a while to get the water to run so it wasn't too noisy. The spray bar really helps. I'm hoping it will be even quieter after it grabs some algae.

My understanding of the principle of Turf Scrubbing is to grow algae as fast as possible
and harvest it regularly to remove nutrients, especially Nitrogen
compounds, from the system. It seems to me that regular harvesting of actively
growing macroalgae from a Refugium could be considered in the same
category of filtration as a Turf Scrubber.
Though Turf Scrubbers are a great method there seems to be one inherent problem. Finding an appropriate turf algae. There is a tendency over time to grow hair algae which leads to hair algae outbreaks in the display. Below is a tank in the Ogden/Roy area in 2003 that used a Turf Scrubber. Notice the very deep DSB of Utah Oolitic sand.

The Turf Scrubber is the long white glow at the top area of the stand. Sorry I didn't take an actual pic of the long raceway where the algae was growing.

The tank had a very nice growth of Halimeda.

And a healthy Pipe Organ Coral that was rarely seen in those days.

You definately want to harvest the algae, but never clean the mat completely. You want to make sure that you have algae intact so it will grow. On the two systems I ran them on that had only one mat I would scrape half of it at a time (half of it every week). When the algae mat was developing I would see hair algae, but as nutrients levels lowered it seemed to be the first thing to disappear.

My nitrates are about 50 ppm. Phosphates are like nothing, but I am currently running phosban. Should I shut down the phosban reactor to help get this started?
I clean socks twice a week, so keeping this harvested (if I can get it to grow at all) won't be too bad. I like the idea of 1/2 at a time. I took off the socks in the sump when I installed this. The drain from the display to the sump doesn't filter over the top of this, but is right next to it. Should I keep a sock on or off of that? I have a large live rock underneath the scrubber, and I will probably add some rubble around that too. I do have a sponge I could use in the area before the return pump that would keep stuff from going back in the display or clogging the pump itself. With the socks, I didn't need to use it.
The tank is well established at this point and I have a good CUC in the display and lots of flow. Hopefully that will help prevent algae in there. Currently, there isn't any algae on the rocks. I allow a bit of film on the glass to help keep the CUC fed.

BTW, I had a very nice short mat growing on one of the walls in the fuge about 6 months ago (when my nitrates were 0). I couldn't harvest it, but the bugs loved it. For some reason it bothered me, so I cleaned it off one day (silly me).

I would keep the phosban reactor going personally. Do you run phosban in it, or another brand?
I would leave the sock in place at least until you have your scrubber up and running with a good mat on it. After that I would run it off and on to improve water clarity and get some of the larger particulate matter out of the water column.
One other questions, what are you using to light this up? You need a good light source around 6500k or so to get a good growth rate on the scrubber.

In case anyone was interested, the tank Mark is referring to belongs to Ferrel Spackman. He lives in Harrisville (which is just north of Ogden). I'm haven't seen or talked to him for a long while, but his tank was amazing at the time. He was certainly a proponent of the turf scrubber filter.

I'm running two daisy chained chambers, one with AC, the other with Phosban.
I have a quad PC light over the fuge that I have shifted so that it lights both compartments. I currently get coraline algae growing in the sump and my skimmer from this light and I have shifted it over more. I plan to replace that with the clamp on version, but I haven't figured out a good way to clamp one on to my system so it doesn't fall in.
I'm not really looking to have this scrubber do all my filtering, I still have a skimmer and DBS in the fuge. I'm just trying to cut down on the need for WCs to control the nitrates.

I'm starting to rethink if I did this right. Currently, if the pump is off (power outage, cleaning), there isn't any water going over this and I think the top half would dry out quickly. Would it work better to set this up flat at the same level as the top of my water (maybe I could build some type of acrylic tray or shelf for it to sit on so that water sheet flows off of it and into the sump? If the power goes out or if I am cleaning, water would go into the sump and raise the level of the water in the sump an inch or two.
I think I am over complicating this...

I agree with what Mark said. With Chaetomorpha now commonly available and being a fast growing algae I think a refugium can work as a great "Algae/Turf Scrubber".

Oh, I have chaeto that has been sitting in the fuge! I still have nitrates at 50 with the chaeto.

Unfortunately I do not. I had a laptop crash about a year ago that had most of my photos on it.
Its similar to yours except it had a slice lengthwise in the tube which the screen I used rested in. That seemed to work well for me on distributing the water evenly over the screen and keeping noise down.
I wouldn't worry about the mat drying out that fast. If you loose power you need to get it restored via generator or some other means quickly anyhow and if you just shut the pump off for cleaning it will not dry out that fast.

The idea is the same for sure. I have had good success with both ways of doing it. Matter of fact I bought a system here that was set up to have a refugium, so I went that direction on this tank and have chaeto in the regufium.
The only item I liked better about the turf scrubber is that I did not have the build up of detritus in the ATS mat as compared to the chaeto in the refugium. Not that it ever created an issue for me, it just released a ton of crap into the tank when I thinned the chaeto ball out. In hindsight this may have been feeding my corals when the material was released into the tank.
Both methods are excellent, just a matter of what direction you prefer to go and how much space you have to work with.

I think the key when using a refugium as a "turf scrubber" (I know is not technically a turf scrubber), is to harvest often. I like "scrubbers" and have used a few in the past, but the ended up being too much hassle for me.

I assume this will become a hassle for me too, but for now it is something new and an interesting challenge.
Mostly I just want my nitrates to go away. The chaeto isn't growing fast enough to harvest it. I don't know why. The fuge in my other tank grows it like a weed. I'm going to go swap out some lights.

Mine was fed from my return pump, so if it clogged it just sent more water to the tank.
I never had a lot of trouble out of it, but I mess with my stuff continuously, so it never really had a lot of chance to clog.

Look at the difference in the algae that is growing on the walls of the fuge overnight. Is that normal? I don't see any visible algae on the screen yet.

If this isn't enough light I quit. One side has a 90/26w bulb, the other has a 75/18w bulb and a 90/26w shoplight (two 13w 7000k bulbs). I think I will keep the fuge itself dark and fill it up with rubble for little critters to play in.

The cluster of lights is definitely a drawback. I'll have to research a bit about how to set these up best with T5s. I'm probably going to remove the pc light from the fuge and just put a ton of rubble in there.
I'm getting some very good growth on this. But, I don't think I have enough flow coming out of the fuge as I need for the size of screen I have. As the algae is starting to grow I can tell the flow is slowing even more.
I am currently having an issue with a high daytime pH (8.5-8.6) since this was installed. Evening pH is around 8.0-8.1. Here is a comparison...any suggestions? 11/30 184 alk 425 calc 1320 mag (dosed) 25-50 nitrate 8.15 (morning) - pH probe 77.4 temp 1.025 salinity
12/3 144 ppm alk 385 ppm calc
1350 ppm mag 8.4 / 8.53 pH (early evening) - API test / pH probe 79.2 temp 1.0255 salinity

I appreciate your interest in trying something new. For years I led
the way in trying new techniques in the WMAS from the first RDP
Refugium in 1997 to the first suspended reef in 2005.
Is the pH probe reading correctly? Has it been calibrated lately? Actually 8.5 is not any worry, IMO. Is the probe located downstream from something that may be giving the water a temporary pH boost? A waterfall perhaps?
If the Nitrate level is really 50ppm, which I question, then there are several other, much simpler, ways to reduce that level.
Anyway, you have already come upon what would have been my first suggestion, a lot more light to grow the macroalgae. I have used almost 100 watts in most of my Refugiums.
Second, any time you strip the water of PO4 the N eating organisms are going to have more trouble growing and you may be left with extra N compounds. Especially if the water is stripped of PO4 prior to the Refugium.
Third, the sand bed makes a huge difference to filtration. I've shown hobbyists how just a few quarts of Oolitic sand placed in 2-3 spots in the substrate can significantly reduce N compounds and nuisance algae growth.
These are just a few helpful hints. I'm happy to discuss more if you like.

pH probe was calibrated about a month ago, but I never rely on it when it reads outside of normal range. I did an API test that read 8.4. I was just shocked when the alk and calc were as low as they are. The probe is located in the tank itself downstream of the return. Kalk releases just before water is returned back to the tank and the NEW waterfall is the scrubber in the other part of the sump before the skimmer. I'm sure that is what this is related to.
Why do you question the 50 ppm on the nitrate?
What you say about the PO4 makes a lot of sense. Hadn't ever thought about that. I did remove the phosban when I set this up, so that should help restore the balance.
I already added a deep sand bed (5-6") to the fuge earlier this year. Adding the finer sand to the sandbed in my 55 fixed the problem I had in there within a month. Before I only had a medium grade sand in it. The 125 has fine-med sand and is the size that works for my Bluespots. The fuge sand is finer.

Actually, if the benefits of this system over chaetomorpha are such that the macroalgae toxins are reduced, then there could be greater growth in coral. What would be interesting is multiple setups using each method (macroalgae, turf scubber, etc) with similar-sized frags, similar live rock, same placement of pumps, etc.
I like to see someone going back to public-aquarium proven ideas, and trying them rather than the stand-by methods of algae control. You don't really have that much to lose, right? I say keep going.

In one place you refer to Nitrate being 25-50 ppm. That's a pretty large difference. Is it closer to 25 or to 50? It makes a great deal of difference to some coral.
Good luck in finding a true turf algae that will work effectively. Be careful the scrubber doesn't just become a wet-dry/trickle filter that creates more Nitrates than it disposes of.
There is one more thing I'd like to say about Nitrates. My understanding is that they are mostly dealt with by bacteria that live in the low O2 area. That area is mostly in a sand bed and deep in the LR. The bacteria breaks Nitrate into Oxygen or even water and Nitrogen gas. The Nitrogen gas (N2) then dissipates into the water column and is expelled at the water surface.

Wow, didn't realize you were so picky! 25-50 range is related to when I test. If I test just after a water change is it closer to 25, if I test just before closer to 50. If I test somewhere in between, then it is somewhere in between. When I can't read for sure which of the two pink colors it is, I indicate a range between the two. I'd say this is close enough and not any reason for you to doubt the number I stated.
I do hope for luck! I just won the coolest tank  and I'd say that was luck (as well as the fact that I entered the drawing too). So far, everything else I have tried my luck at hasn't brought down the nitrates. I'm just trying something else. I really don't understand why you are so negative about this. In time, this may work or it might not. I'm okay with it either way. The world won't end if it doesn't grow the perfect algae!

So I did some reading up on the turf scrubber idea, including reading a few books. However, I'm curious to know where you got the quote from Borneman about turf algae.
So how big did you make your scrubber? I was thinking that 24"x12" scrubber for my future tank would be about right. In concept, replacement of a skimmer and macroalgae is very tempting to me- probably wouldn't hurt to try it, right?
Are you going to switch on and off the flow to your scrubber?

I think the biggest reason we done see a lot of these is the fact that Addey has the patent tied up for a commercial version to be developed. A lot of people don't want the DIY projects, so they go with things that are commercially available.

Lorraine, please understand where I am coming from. I mean no offense. I've been at this very intensely for 15 years. I've seen a lot of setups. A lot more than most people with 15 years of experience because of my formerly aggressive effort at getting to know club members, visiting them and learning from them.
I've helped teach a multitude of hobbyists how to reduce N compounds to acceptable levels without resorting to water changes. Each tank is different, allowing a slightly different solution to it's problems. My approach has always been to critically evaluate what is currently going on so an effective solution can be found. This may be a little tough sometimes, but it might be considered tough love. And it gets results.
Anyway, Corey pointed me to the information by SantaMonica regarding the turf scrubber. SM points out the same disadvantages to skimming as I have always held and that's why I have been skimmerless for 11 years and a BIG proponent of algae and the harvesting of algae as a major filtration avenue.
SantaMonica makes several important points: 1. easier to set up than traditional Algal Turf Scrubbers (ATS) 2. claim that proper turf algae starts growing on it's own in time 3. smaller size and portability than traditional ATS
But there is one thing to notice. A tank that has no macroalgae growing in it is less than acceptable to me. I grow Macroalgae in my tanks for three major reasons, one of which is filtration. The second reason is feeding. Algae feeds the Herbivorous fishes and provides habitat for all the organisms eaten by carnivorous fishes. The third reason is that I love the look. It just looks like nature.
The use of an ATS takes nutrients away from the algae I want growing in my tanks. That is it's major drawback in my tanks.

I just felt that the critism regarding the level was unnecessary. I've read a lot of your posts and respect your knowledge. I know my tank very well since it is over 10 years old. I have worked with this tank when nitrates were well over 200 and when they were 0 ppm.

Please don't take offense. Try to understand what I saw when you said your Nitrates were somewhere between 25-50. Water changes to reduce Nitrates in a tank that's 10 yrs old  Maybe it is experiencing [very] Old Tank Syndrome? Are you willing to look at the whole setup and do some critical evaluation and changes? There could be problems that need fixing that an ATS will only be a Band-Aid. Please forgive me for saying something that may offend you, but the tank could be on the verge of a crash.

The tank crashed a few years ago (used a bad dechlorinator during a WC). I have rebuilt it since. I removed the very sweet plenum filter and replaced most the sand and echanged out and added additional live rock. I added a refugium and put a deep sand bed in it, I replaced the skimmer with a better one. Nitrates were 0 a few months ago. The source is additional fish and feedings. No, I'm not removing fish. No, I'm not going to stop feeding.
So, I guess the answer is I'm not starting over. Not even close to necessary IMHO.

So you dechlorinate tap water for water changes?
Is it an RDP Refugium and how bright is the RDP light?

I now use RO/DI. But, yes for 8 years I used dechlorinated tap water.
Yes, it is a RDP Refugium. It is a 13X13X19" cube made for me by LifeReef that gravity feeds to the sump. I have an internal MJ pump inside for additional flow. The light on the fuge is a 96w quad PC retrofit (I experimented with several others before settling on this one). I only have 4-5 inches of clearance for a light, so the clamp on version didn't fit. I run the light about 14 hours a night.
If I end up liking the turf scrubber, I will just keep the DSB and top the fuge off with rubble.
I did a small (8 gallon) WC before I tested my water yesterday.
Nitrates 50 ppm
Phosphate 0.03 ppm

Typically, that should be sufficient light for the Refugium, but that Nitrate level just shouldn't be 50. I'm . Do you mind if I ask a few questions?
1. How well is the algae growing in the Refugium? A normal growth should be doubling about every 2-4 weeks. Is it growing that well? 2. In that small of a Refugium, a powerhead should not be needed. How much flow goes through there? 3. You recently removed the PO4 remover, have you noticed any increase in algal growth? 4. How about Coralline growth? 5. What are the fish living in this system? 6. Can you post a pic of the entire sump/refugium area tell us the type and size of the return pump and describe the flow. And we would love to see a full tank shot too.
The reason I'm asking these questions is because something doesn't feel right here. I believe we can help you improve the current setup to reduce Nitrates. This would not preclude the ATS, but why not help the tank do better by making a few minor adjustments in the current setup?

1) In general I have never been happy with the rate that my chaeto grows. Sometimes it grows that fast and other times hardly grows at all. It was pretty dormant recently, until the past week when it doubled (removed the Phosban reactor, added 3 lights into the sump area).
2) 200-300 gph flow rate into the fuge. I was getting a film on the top of the fuge if I didn't use a powerhead and it would get cyano on the chaeto as well.

4) All rocks in the display are covered with coraline. I keep it scraped off of the back glass. There is some coraline growing on the wall of the fuge as well. Before the rebuild I didn't have any coraline algae growth because the phosphate levels at the time were inhibiting that growth.
5) Palani Tang, yellow tang, 6 percula clowns, 3 anthias, 2 bluespots, a blenny, and a chromis.
6) Iwaki 30RLT return pump (about 550-600 gph - the max the overflow can handle). This returns on a split line. Internally I am also running a Vortech M40 and MJ1200 for additional circulation. I could take some photos later this evening, but there are some pics in my signature line of the tank and also some more in the writeup for April Tank of the Month.
I don't have any nuisance algae growth. I do keep a sizeable cleaning crew in the tank. I think the increased rate of chaeto growth and/or the ATS will deal with the Nitrate problem within a few more weeks.

Scrubber at 8 days. The blotchy spots are pods eating the turf. I was told it is time to clean it off!

Thanks for posting, this has been an interesting thread. I thought algal scrubbers were a thing of the past, but alas.
I know what you mean with rate of macro growth in a refugium. There was a time I would harvest once a month just before a wmas meeting and bring 3 1/2 -4 large ziploc bags cramed full of algae. Now I go for a bout a year before I harvest. I have changed the original setup many times to try and speed up the growth but nothing has worked. You should see a plethora of pods and such, which is what I loved about my fuge.
I am glad you did this, if I listened to the nay-sayers I would not have had suspended my reef in 2002  !

This is a long post. Please forgive me. I wish I could visit and actually help you make some of the immediate improvements that could make such a difference in tank health.
1) Your unhappiness with the slow growth of Macroalgae was an internal message that something needed to be changed. Keep looking for and following those messages. As you found, light is a very important factor. I challenge you to find even brighter lights and to discover a way to place the light to within an inch of the high water mark. Placing the light closer to the algae makes a great deal of difference. There are economically priced PC bulbs at the hardware stores now with a wattage approaching 100 and with a daylight color around 6000 Kelvin, perfect for a Refugium or ATS. (btw, the algae growing on your ATS screen right now is not a turf, yet. It is a diatomaceous algae, the same golden brown algae that grows on surfaces in a newly set up or recently changed tank.) FYI, the simple way to get a clip-on fixture to stay in place is to tie it to something above. If some of the plumbing runs above the area, use zip ties or a length of twine to tie it up. A grabber screw partially screwed into and sticking down from the "roof" right above the light can be used if the plumbing is not convenient. To attach a zip tie to the grabber screw, first run the zip tie from the light up next to the screw then, with a second zip tie sliped through the first zip tie and around the screw, cinch the first tie to the screw. (This is hard to explain, but easy to show. I can post a pic if needed.)
2) A flow rate of 200-300 gph flow rate into the fuge is insufficient. It could be so much more efficient if you tripled or even quadrupled that flow. I assume you can adjust some valves to accomplish this. "I was getting a film...and cyano" Exactly! Increased flow will solve those little nuisances and will vastly increase Macroalgae growth, in turn decreasing N and PO4 
4) Nice to see that Coralline growth is good. "Before the rebuild I didn't have any coraline algae growth because the phosphate levels at the time were inhibiting that growth." I can assure you that PO4 levels were only a small part of the problem, if any. The new sand also provided minerals immediately accessible for growth. Part of the idea of Old Tank Syndrome is that certain minerals had become depleted in this ~8 yr old setup.
5) "Palani Tang, yellow tang, 6 percula clowns, 3 anthias, 2 bluespots, a blenny, and a chromis. " = 15 fish (size unknown) If I remeber correctly from your writing, this is a 120-130 gal tank right? Here is the list of the 16 fish in our 75 gal tank without a Refugium : 5" Rabbitfish, 4" Yellow Tang, 3" Blue Tang, 2.5" Purple Pseudochromis, 3x 2.5" Blue Damsels, 5 Cardinals, 2 Chromis, and a pair of mated Maroon Clownfishes having fun in 4 anemones. 
6) "...(about 550-600 gph - the max the overflow can handle)"  Please pardon me, but that's a real waste of an Iwaki pump which could be circulating almost twice that flow. Please don't be offended but have you considered simply modifying the overflow for an increase in circulation? I know it can be done and would be happy to discuss it further. "...also running a Vortech M40 and MJ1200." I can see why those were needed.

Wonderful, and even without the special ATS, my bet is that doubling or tripling the flow through the Refugium with greater light would have decreased the Nitrates to 20 within a week or two. One last thing. From the beautiful pics on your website, I'm not sure I would worry too much about a reading of 50ppm Nitrate. It's likely that the test kit is reading high. Things look like they are doing good. Do you notice any change in the appearance of any of the coral when you miss feeding for a few days or when you do a water change? my 2 cents

Hurting my brain!
1) I think my neighbors want me to shut off the lights at night! They are so bright already! I need to drill a bunch of holes in the top of the stand all at once and just get hangers that are already in place for when I get the mood for another project. My hubby gets nervous when I start aiming the drill at the bottom of the tank though. 
2) Unfortunately, the design is a gravity feed through a 1" drain and that is all it can handle. I'm not in the mood to drill another hole, etc. I'm not sure why it would make a difference if I have already increased the flow with the MJ? The way it is now, water that is in there has more time to be cleaned before it is dumped back into the sump. Isn't there some value in that?
4) No fair, you skipped a #! Let me just say that my practices before the crash were much less techy than they are now. I was quite neglectful. You would die if you knew how I did WCs and mixed my salt water!
5) I know how big my fishies are, but it is a secret. Ok, Mr. Palani is B I G (but he's kinda like the big dog that doesn't know he's big - not that that is relevant). Yellow Tang is good sized too. 3 of the clowns are babies, the rest are typical sizes.
6) The pump is not under used. It is only rated at 510 GPH @ 4 ft Head. I had a Titanium T2 pump before the crash and when I started upgrading equipment the overflow box was the first thing to go. I bought a new LifeReef Overflow (a single) that was rated for 700 gph, well over what the T2 was capable of. After buying a larger pump, I found out that it doesn't operate at that capacity. I had no intention of replacing the pump, but the T2 had another idea. I tried three different pumps and this is the right sized pump for system and overflow that I have. I invested a lot in this overflow, and it will be what I have until my next tank upgrade.
Overall my corals are happy (or as Sukie put it - they are "fleshy"). They do ask me to change their water from time to time. I usually try and change it a day before they ask. I know, that just sounds funny, but your's talk to you don''t they? I have been doing larger WCs because they were talking, but I don't like to work that hard. So, the ATS is just an easy experiment. I'm not attached to it, but I'd like to see what it does. I don't expect or necessarily want it to replace everything I already have.
