These are xenias right? If not what are they and why are they closing up? Think they'd be happier somewhere else in the tank? They were open when I first got them and now they just stay closed but the stuff below has been open a lot. They are on the same rock and came from the same place.

Yes xenias.  They close when something has touched them, say that nice shrimp. After a few minutes they should re-open.

All the xenias that I have always had have been the first coral to show signs the tank was stressed. They are very hardy but the are very sensitive also

I agree with Mike. Xenia can be a good barometer for the tank. They will also close up if they are irritated or damaged. In a healthy tank they recover quickly. Have you checked your iodine levels?

I don't have a test for that but tested these things.
Calcium-360
Nitrate-20
Phosphate-0.0
Kh-12
Specific gravity-1.022
The temp. is a little high but the rest of my stuff seems to like it and it's about the only temp. that I can get to stay constant even with the heat and A/C on and off with this whack weather we're having. It's at 80 and may drop to 79 every once in a while. I was going to do a wc this weekend but decided to do it last night because it's driving me crazy that everything else I've put in there has went crazy and this stuff hasn't. Every time I've checked things out before all the tests have come back in the parameters they should be except this last test. I'm going to do those tests again in a min. and post them.

I was told that they don't do well over 80. It could be the temp.

I keep my tank at 83 and all my xenia does great. It could be from sudden temp changes though.

Ok so I have a 29 bio-cube with about 15-20 pounds of rock with a fairly thick sand bed and just did a 4 gallon WC and nothing really changed only the Kh it went down to 10. Can I do another WC or will that stress my stuff?

be careful with xenia--might want to put it on it's own rock in the middle of the sandbed.  It's an awesome coral, but silver tip especially will take over things once it gets going (and it's hard to get rid of later).  Still though, everyone loves that coral that closes and opens.

Was that in there yesterday? Casper--WY windier than ?

Down to a 20, soon to double or nothing

mine werent opening up as well as they are now i put them in a higher flow after adding 2 korila nano pumps to my 28g nanocube
you should be fine with another water change if your worried wait 2 or 3 days to do another

Maybe you don't have enough flow on it or light?  My pom-pom loves full-on direct flow from my return pump and is very high up in the tank -- it is growing like crazy.

Regarding temperature, I target 80 degrees, so I doubt that is the problem.  I think anywhere from low to mid 70's up to 84 degrees is fine.  Stability in temp is more important.

Your nitrates may be near the high end.  I try and keep mine at 10 or below.  They usually peak at 10 before a water change.  Your specific gravity is lower than I keep mine - I target 1.025/1.026, however I'm sure there are others on the board that target lower than that.  Was your pH ok?   I target 8.3.  Also, your calcium is on the low end, I target 450, but that shouldn't matter for the xenia.

You can get a cheap iodine test for around $11 on foster/smith that seems to work just fine.  I do test and dose iodine.

I think the nitrates are high too.

my xenia has its out tonga branch that makes it a lil ways away from the rest on my coral mountain. also i keep my temp above 80 almost all the time. i've had my tank as high as 87 and all of my stuff lived and the xenia seemed to love it when it was warmer.

pitiful guppy tank.

Thats where it attached to the rock and was even closer at one point when I got it so I'm not sure if that's what is going on. I did do another WC and they seem to like that a lot.
