| So, I am setting up a 150, but have a few weeks before I can start it up. I figured I could take the time and try my hand at curing some rock and making some LS and LW. So here I am going to show my ignorance (14 years of freshwater doesn't help much here). I am assuming I can fill up a couple tanks and put some sand and dead rock and add some live sand and live rock and let it work its magic? Can I just use RO water, salt, heater and powerhead? How much rock and sand in relation to gallons of what can I do? |

yea its really that simple. if your going to use the 150 i wouls say you need around 150 lbs of rock. thats the general rule of thumb. by the way where are you located? ------------- pitiful guppy tank. shane |

Thanks! Any reason I couldn't use plastic bins for this part? I am in Springville. I am doing a mostly fish tank, but want to do a suspended reef in both corners. I don't think I will be able to pull off 150 pounds of rock (I need space for a ray). I may be able to do 100. Will that cover? I have a protien skimmer for rated for a 400 gallon tank that I am hoping will help. I can also add some rock and sand to my sump. |

plastic tubs would work thats how i start my rock most of the time. its not a big deal about how much rock generally its more less there for natural filtration. rock and sand is a must in the sump... ------------- pitiful guppy tank. shane |

The missing component in your list is light. The life that you want on the LR cannot survive nor grow without light.

| Thanks Mark, I did read that article. That is what gave me the idea. I was planning on using a light, but forgot to mention it. I have a 4 bulb 48" PC that I was planning on setting right on top of the bin. Will that be enought light (2 10000 k bulbs and 2 actinic)? When it goes into the tank I am adding a MH halide as well, but was hoping not to turn the MH on just for the bin. |

i just bought a 150 and it had 200 pounds of rock and 200 pounds of crushed coral sand mix that he had let die whatis the best way to cure it in the tank ------------- Red sea 650 and two 35g red sea all for sale |

yea it was it took me three days to clean it and set it all up, the return pump for the sump had froze up so i had to take it apart oil and clean it but its all up and going now, i added about 75 pounds of live rock and 20 pounds of live sand and am going to trie to cure the 100 pounds of rock i left in but it looks good i will post a pic later today ------------- Red sea 650 and two 35g red sea all for sale |
